Reggie Royals
Reginald Legrande Royals (September 18, 1950 – April 16, 2009) was an American basketball player who played professionally in the original American Basketball Association (ABA). Royals, a 6'10" center from Whiteville, North Carolina, played college basketball at Florida State University from 1970 to 1973. In his career, Royals averaged 16.7 points and 12.0 rebounds per game and as a junior led the Seminoles to the program's first Final Four in 1972. Following the close of his college career, Royals was drafted by both the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the New York Nets of the American Basketball Association (ABA). However, his professional career lasted just two ABA games (and 4 total points) for the San Diego Conquistadors in the 1974–75 season. Whiteville, North Carolina
Whiteville is a city in Columbus County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,394 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Columbus County and is the county seat. History Columbus County was created in 1808. In 1810, a community was platted on land owned by James B. White for the purpose of creating a county seat and establishing government buildings. It was originally known as White's Crossing before being incorporated under its present name in 1832. A post office called Whiteville has been in operation since 1821. The town was sacked by Union forces during the latter stages of the American Civil War. In 1950, Whiteville fielded a professional minor league baseball team in the Class D Tobacco State League. 1974–75 ABA Season
The 1974–75 ABA season was the eighth season of the American Basketball Association. The Kentucky Colonels won the 1975 ABA Championship after winning the Eastern Division; the Denver Nuggets won the Western Division. Julius Erving and George McGinnis shared the league's MVP award. Preseason Prior to the start of the season the Eastern Division changed as the Memphis Tams gave way to the Memphis Sounds and the Carolina Cougars were bought by Ozzie and Daniel Silna and relocated and became the Spirits of St. Louis. The Western Division remained unchanged save for the Denver Rockets renaming themselves the Denver Nuggets. The ABA and NBA continued playing preseason exhibition games between their teams. The ABA won 16 of the 23 games, to 7 wins for the NBA.
