Reg Ellis (Australian Sportsman)
Reginald Newnham Ellis (22 February 1891 – 26 May 1959) was an Australian sportsman who played first-class cricket for Victoria and Australian rules football in the Victorian Football League (VFL) mainly with St Kilda. A New South Welshman, the defender played 53 games in the VFL from 1913 to 1915 and captained New South Wales in interstate football. Early Life in Sydney Ellis was born in Randwick, New South Wales, a suburb of Sydney, however he was schooled in Melbourne for a few years where he learned to play Australian rules and developed a passion for it, continuing to play upon his return to Sydney. He joined the Y.M.C.A football club in the New South Wales Football Association Ellis represented New South Wales in the 1911 Adelaide Carnival. Randwick is a suburb of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Randwick is located 6 kilometres south-east of the Sydney central business district and is the administrative centre for the local government area of the City of Randwick. Randwick is part of the Eastern Suburbs region. The postcode is 2031. History Randwick was named after the village of Randwick, Gloucestershire, England, birthplace of Simeon Henry Pearce, who became Mayor of Randwick six times. Simeon, who migrated to Australia in 1842, and his brother James who arrived in 1848, were responsible for the founding and early development of Randwick. Simeon built the first stone house in the area in 1848, called Blenheim House, which can still be seen in Blenheim Street. This is a list of Victoria first-class cricketers. The Victoria cricket team have played first-class cricket since 1851, when they played the Tasmania cricket team at Launceston. Below is a chronological list of cricketers to have represented Victoria at first-class level. Many of the cricketers played first-class cricket for other teams but the information included under 'Debut', 'Career' and 'Matches' are for their career with the Victoria cricket team. The first day of each match is the date given as their debut. Alan Fairfax
Alan Geoffrey Fairfax (16 June 1906 – 17 May 1955) was an Australian cricketer who played in ten Test matches from 1929 to 1931. He was an all rounder. Fairfax had a rapid rise to international honours, making his test debut the same season as his first class debut. His test career was cut short when he emigrated to England in 1932 to play in the Lancashire League as a professional. Biography Fairfax's uncle was a top grade player, BW Fairfax. Early years Fairfax was a child prodigy as a player, breaking records for Kogarah School. At age 14 he made 1,942 runs and took 130 wickets over the summer. He was soon playing for St George in grade cricket. However over the next few summers his form suffered and it seemed he would not live up to his initial promise. Sheffield Shield
The Sheffield Shield (currently known for sponsorship reasons as the Marsh Sheffield Shield) is the domestic first-class cricket competition of Australia. The tournament is contested between teams from the six states of Australia. Sheffield Shield is named after Lord Sheffield. Prior to the Shield being established, a number of intercolonial matches were played. The Shield, donated by Lord Sheffield, was first contested during the 1892–93 season, between New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria. Queensland was admitted for the 1926–27 season, Western Australia for the 1947–48 season, and Tasmania for the 1977–78 season. The competition is contested in a double- round-robin format, with each team playing every other team twice, i.e. home and away. Stuart King
Stuart Patrick King (22 April 1906 – 28 February 1943) was an Australian sportsman who played first-class cricket for Victoria and Australian rules football for Victorian Football League club St Kilda. Family The son of David James King (1873-), and Emily Mary King, née Matthews, later Mrs. Edwards, Stuart Patrick King was born in Ararat, Victoria on 22 April 1906. He married Kathleen Patricia Lightfoot (1911-) at Newman College's chapel on 14 January 1935. They had two children: Gerald and Diana. Basil Onyons
Basil Austin Onyons (14 March 188731 May 1967) was an Australian first-class cricketer who represented Victoria. Onyons was originally an Australian rules footballer and played for the Melbourne Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL) between 1905 and 1908. He kicked 32 goals from his 37 games, with 16 of them coming in the 1906 season which was the most by a Melbourne player that year. Fred Baring
Frederick Albert Baring (15 December 1890 – 10 December 1961) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the early 1900s. In 1997 he was named at fullback in Essendon's official Team of the Century. He also played first-class cricket for Victoria.
