Jardins De Métis
The Jardins de Métis, also known in English as the Reford Gardens, is an English garden, English-style garden located at Grand-Métis, Quebec. Originally private, the gardens were opened to the public in 1962. The gardens were designated a National Historic Sites of Canada, Canadian National Historic Site in 1995 and as a Quebec heritage site by the Ministry of Culture and Communications (Quebec), Ministry of Culture and Communications of Quebec in 2013. Description The property covers about 18 hectares (45 acres). The gardens contain approximately 3,000 plant varieties. Alexander Reford
Alexander Reford is an historian by training, with master's degrees in history from the University of Toronto and Oxford University. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, in 1962, he was raised and educated in the Outaouais region of Québec. He held the position of Dean of College at St. Michael's College at the University of Toronto from 1987 to 1995. He left to assume the directorship of Les Jardins de Métis (Reford Gardens), a cultural destination and tourist attraction located on the banks of the St. Lawrence in Grand-Métis, Quebec. The great-grandson of Elsie Reford, creator of the Gardens, he was instrumental in creating the not for profit organization that purchased them from the Quebec government in 1995. Elsie Reford
Elsie Reford (; January 22, 1872 – November 8, 1967) was a pioneer of Canadian horticulture, creating one of the largest private gardens in Canada on her estate, Estevan Lodge in eastern Quebec. Located in Grand-Métis on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, her gardens have been open to the public since 1962 and operate under the name ''Les Jardins de Métis and Reford Gardens''. Coming from modest backgrounds themselves, Elsie’s parents ensured that their children received a good education. Robert Wilson Reford (1867–1951) was a Canadian photographer, businessman and art collector. Birth and education Reford was born in the Golden Square Mile, Montreal, the eldest son of Robert Wilson Reford Sr., Robert Wilson Reford and Katherine Sheriff Drummond, daughter of Andrew Drummond of Tredinnock, near Stirling in Scotland. He was educated at Upper Canada College in Toronto and Lincoln College, Sorel-Tracy, Quebec, Sorel, Quebec.
