Rees Thomas (footballer)
Rees Thomas (3 January 1934 – 6 November 2017) was a Welsh professional association football, footballer who played as a right back in the English Football League, Football League for Torquay United F.C., Torquay United, Brighton & Hove Albion F.C., Brighton & Hove Albion, A.F.C. Bournemouth, Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic, Portsmouth F.C., Portsmouth and Aldershot F.C., Aldershot. Life and career Thomas was born in 1934 in Penywaun and attended the Gadlys School in Aberdare. He captained the Wales schoolboys representative team. When he left school, he joined Brighton & Hove Albion, but soon returned to Wales where he signed for Cardiff City F.C., Cardiff City as a junior. He turned professional in January 1951, and remained with the club for five more years, but never played for their league team. Penywaun
Penywaun (also in ) is a community, electoral ward and north-western suburb of Aberdare in the Cynon Valley within the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales. At the 2011 census, the population of the ward was registered as 3,063. Etymology Penywaun derives from two common Welsh toponyms "Pen" meaning top or head and "Gwaun" meaning moorland. Writing in 1887, Rev. Thomas Morgan states that the toponym (which he spells "Penwaun") indicates the end of the moor known as the ''Hirwaun Gwrgant'' or Gwrgan's "Waun". Background Much of the local housing was built by the local Aberdare urban district council after the Second World War in several stages, starting with simple pre-fabricated houses. Des Tennant
Desmond Warren Tennant (17 October 1925 – 12 January 2009) was a Welsh professional footballer who scored 40 goals from 400 appearances in the Football League playing for Brighton & Hove Albion. Life and career Tennant was born in Aberdare and attended the town's Boys' Grammar School, where he played both football and rugby. He began his football career as a junior with Cardiff City, when he was capped by Wales at youth level. After making 31 appearances in the Southern League for Barry, Tennant joined Brighton & Hove Albion, making his Football League debut in the 1948–49 season. Although primarily a right back, he played in a variety of positions, and was the club's top scorer in his first season with 11 goals in all competitions. Hereford United
Hereford United Football Club was an association football club based in Hereford, England. They played at Edgar Street for their entire history. They were nicknamed 'The Whites' or 'The Lilywhites', after their predominantly white kit, or 'The Bulls' after the Hereford cattle breed. They contested A49 derby games with Shrewsbury Town. Founded in 1924, the club entered the Birmingham Combination and switched to the Birmingham & District League four years later. They entered the Southern League after World War II, winning the North-West Division in 1958–59 and Division One in 1964–65. Southern Football League
The Southern League is a men's football competition featuring semi-professional clubs from the South and Midlands of England. Together with the Isthmian League and the Northern Premier League it forms levels seven and eight of the English football league system. Football League Fourth Division
The Football League Fourth Division was the fourth-highest division in the English football league system from the 1958–59 season until the creation of the Premier League prior to the 1992–93 season. Whilst the division disappeared in name in 1992, the 4th tier of English football continued as the Football League Third Division, and later became known as Football League Two.
