Diana Devora Redhouse (26 April 1923 – 19 October 2007) was a British artist, best known as the designer in 1963 of the Amnesty candle, part of Amnesty International's first ever Christmas card, a candle wrapped in barbed wire, chosen because of "its simplicity and the effectiveness of its symbolism". Background Redhouse was born in London to Jewish parents of Polish/Russian origin, and educated at a local convent school which only had two or three Jewish girls. She left school at 16, and served in the army during the war, who afterwards helped her get a place at St Martins School of Art. Harry Redhouse
Harry Redhouse (27 March 1880 — 3 December 1959) was an English first-class cricketer. Redhouse was born in March 1880 at Brompton, Kent. A club cricketer for Liphook Cricket Club, Redhouse made a single appearance in first-class cricket for Hampshire against Lancashire at Old Trafford in the 1900 County Championship. Batting twice in the match, he was dismissed without scoring in Hampshire's first innings by Sidney Webb, while in their second innings he was dismissed for 4 runs by Willis Cuttell Willis Robert Cuttell (13 September 1863 – 9 December 1929) was an English cricketer. James Redhouse
Sir James William Redhouse (30 December 1811 – 4 January 1892) authored the original and authoritative Ottoman - English dictionary. He was commissioned by the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions for his dictionary. His work was later used as the basis for many Turkish - English dictionaries. Biography Redhouse was born near London, the eldest son of James Redhouse and his wife Elizabeth Saunders. He was orphaned and educated at Christ's Hospital from 1819 to 1826. In 1826 he toured the Mediterranean, Smyrna (now Izmir) and Constantinople (the entirety of which is now Istanbul). He was offered a post by the Turkish government as a draftsman, and as a result learnt Turkish. In 1830 he visited Russia and returned to England in 1834 to publish a Turkish-English dictionary. In 1838 Redhouse returned to work for the Ottoman government as an interpreter to the Grand Vizier and the Minister for Foreign Affairs. He transferred to the Ottoman Admiralty in 1840, ...
