Red Penguins
Red Penguins is a 2019 American-Russian documentary film directed, written, and produced by Gabe Polsky and in co-production with Studio Hamburg Enterprises and Norddeutscher Rundfunk. The film held its premiere on September 5, 2019 at the Toronto International Film Festival. It received Writers Guild of America and Critics Choice awards nominations. Red Penguins tells the story of opportunism run amok in 1990s Moscow. Shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union, ice hockey teams Pittsburgh Penguins and the HC CSKA Moscow, CSKA Moscow (also known in the West as the Red Army team) formed a joint venture. American marketer Steve Warshaw was sent to Moscow and was tasked to transform the team into the greatest show in Russia, attracting some of the biggest names in Hollywood and advertising along the way. ''Red Army'' is a 2014 American-Russian documentary film directed, produced, and written by Gabe Polsky, executive produced by Jerry Weintraub and Werner Herzog. It premiered at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and was released in limited theaters by Sony Pictures Classics on January 23, 2015. The film tells the story of the Soviet Union national ice hockey team through the eyes of team captain Slava Fetisov, in particular the famed 1990s five-man unit known as The Russian Five. The film details the link between sports and politics. The film also narrates how players were wooed by National Hockey League scouts and eventually flooded NHL rosters. The film is particularly harsh on the ruthless tactics of coach Viktor Tikhonov about whom none of the players have a kind word. Tikhonov died in November 2014. 2019 Toronto International Film Festival
The 44th annual Toronto International Film Festival was held from 5 to 15 September 2019. The opening gala was the documentary film '' Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band'', directed by Daniel Roher, and the festival closed with a screening of the biographical film ''Radioactive'', directed by Marjane Satrapi. Vladislav (Vlad) Nikolayevich Listyev (russian: Владисла́в Никола́евич Листьев, links=no; May 10, 1956 – March 1, 1995) was a Russian journalist and head of the ORT TV Channel (now government-owned Channel One). Alimzhan Tursunovich Tokhtakhounov (russian: Алимжан Турсунович Тохтахунов; born 1 January 1949) is a Russian businessman, suspected criminal, and former sportsman. He is accused in relations with organized crime and bribing of figure skating judges in the 2002 Winter Olympics. Viktor Tikhonov (born 1930)
Viktor Vasilyevich Tikhonov (Russian: Виктор Васильевич Тихонов; 4 June 1930 – 24 November 2014) was a Soviet ice hockey player and coach. Tikhonov was a defenceman with VVS Moscow and Dynamo Moscow from 1949 to 1963, winning four national championships. He was the coach of the Soviet team when it was the dominant team in the world, winning eight World Championship gold medals, as well as Olympic gold in 1984, 1988, and 1992. Tikhonov also led CSKA Moscow to twelve consecutive league championships. He was named to the IIHF Hall of Fame as a builder in 1998. "Start Wearing Purple" is a song by gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello, written by frontman Eugene Hütz. The song was packaged as a double single along with "Sally", and released as the band's second single in February 2006. It appears on their third album '' Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike''. This version is a re-recording of the initial one which was featured in the band's first album, 1999's '' Voi-La Intruder''. It also appears in the soundtrack for the 2005 film ''Everything Is Illuminated'', in which Hütz stars as Alex. Music video The video starts with Hütz wearing ladies shoes, and singing and dancing in the streets.
