Red Foster (baseball)
Charles B. Foster, nicknamed "Red" or "Alabama Red", was an American Negro league first baseman between 1907 and 1911. Foster made his Negro leagues debut in 1907 with the Birmingham Giants, and played for Birmingham again the following season. He went on to play for the San Antonio Black Bronchos, Oklahoma Monarchs, Kansas City Giants, and Kansas City Royal Giants through 1911. A first baseman, abbreviated 1B, is the player on a baseball or softball team who fields the area nearest first base, the first of four bases a baserunner must touch in succession to score a run. The first baseman is responsible for the majority of plays made at that base. In the numbering system used to record defensive plays, the first baseman is assigned the number 3. Also called first sacker or cornerman, the first baseman is ideally a tall player who throws left-handed and possesses good flexibility and quick reflexes. The Negro leagues were United States professional baseball leagues comprising teams of African Americans and, to a lesser extent, Latin Americans. The term may be used broadly to include professional black teams outside the leagues and it may be used narrowly for the seven relatively successful leagues beginning in 1920 that are sometimes termed "Negro Major Leagues". The Kansas City Giants were a professional Negro leagues baseball team, based in Kansas City, Kansas. From 1909 to 1911, the Kansas City Giants played as a member of the Western Independent Clubs.
