Red Dress (embroidery Project)
The ''Red Dress'' is an international collaborative embroidery project, created from 2009 to 2022 and coordinated by Somerset-based British artist Kirstie Macleod. The project began with a commission from the British Council in Dubai, and has since been supported by Arts Council England, the British Embassy in Pristina, and many donations from individuals including a 2020 Crowdfunder. The dress was embroidered by 343 embroiderers (336 women and 7 men) from 46 countries. 136 of the embroiderers were paid for their work and receive a share of exhibition earnings; the others were volunteer participants at events and exhibitions. It is made up of 84 panels of Burgundy (color), burgundy silk dupioni, dupion and weighs . Macleod has said that "The silhouette of this dress is intentionally strong and empowered. Silk
Silk is a natural protein fiber, some forms of which can be woven into textiles. The protein fiber of silk is composed mainly of fibroin and is produced by certain insect larvae to form cocoons. Dupioni (also referred to as douppioni or dupion) is a plain weave silk fabric, produced using fine yarn in the warp and uneven yarn reeled from two or more entangled cocoons in the weft. This creates tightly woven yardage with a highly-lustrous surface and a crisp handle. It is similar to shantung, but slightly thicker, heavier, and with a greater slub (cross-sectional irregularity) count. In Japan a cocoon containing more than one silkworm is called . Dupioni is often woven with differing colors of threads scattered through the warp and weft. The Royal School of Needlework (RSN) is a hand embroidery school in the United Kingdom, founded in 1872 and based at Hampton Court Palace since 1987. History The RSN began as the School of Art Needlework in 1872, founded by Lady Victoria Welby. The first President was Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, Queen Victoria's third daughter, known to the RSN as Princess Helena. She received help from William Morris and many of his friends in the Arts and Crafts movement.
