The Red Cross Medal of Merit was awarded to men and women, Serbian and foreign nationals, in two Classes. Decorations of the Serbian Red Cross Society had the rank of state decorations. History and Criteria The Red Cross Medal of Merit was instituted in 1912, it was awarded by the Board of the Red Cross Society, with the approval of the Chancellor of Royal Orders, for exceptional merit and services rendered to the Serbian Red Cross in time of war or peace, and for care and assistance to the sick and wounded, philanthropy and personal merit. The Medal of Merit was awarded in two Classes (Silver Medal and Bronze Medal). It was first awarded in 1912 during the First Bakan War, In 1933 the awarding of the Bronze Medal ceased and a senior Class of Gold Medal was introduced to replace it. The Red Cross of Serbia ( sr, Црвени крст Србије, Crveni krst Srbije) is a humanitarian, non-governmental organisation that provides humanitarian aid, disaster relief and education in Serbia. It is the national affiliate of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. It was founded on 6 February 1876 by Vladan Đorđević, a prominent Serbian physician and politician. Metropolitan Mihailo, its first president, held the office from its fledgling beginnings in 1876 until 1883. The First Balkan War ( sr, Први балкански рат, ''Prvi balkanski rat''; bg, Балканска война; el, Αʹ Βαλκανικός πόλεμος; tr, Birinci Balkan Savaşı) lasted from October 1912 to May 1913 and involved actions of the Balkan League (the Kingdoms of Kingdom of Bulgaria, Bulgaria, Kingdom of Serbia, Serbia, Kingdom of Greece, Greece and Kingdom of Montenegro, Montenegro) against the Ottoman Empire. The Balkan states' combined armies overcame the initially numerically inferior (significantly superior by the end of the conflict) and strategically disadvantaged Ottoman armies, achieving rapid success. The war was a comprehensive and unmitigated disaster for the Ottomans, who lost 83% of their European territories and 69% of their European population.

Kosovo Maiden
The Kosovo Maiden or Maiden of the Blackbird Field ( sr, Косовка девојка / ) is the central figure of a poem with the same name, part of the Kosovo cycle in the Serbian epic poetry. In it, a young beauty searches the battlefield for her betrothed fiancé and helps wounded Serbian warriors with water, wine and bread after the Battle of Kosovo in 1389 between Serbia and the Ottoman Empire. She finally finds the wounded and dying warrior Pavle Orlović who tells her that her fiancé Milan Toplica and his blood-brothers Miloš Obilić and Ivan Kosančić are dead. Before the battle they had given her a cloak, golden ring and veil for the wedding as a promise of safe return, but they were slain and Pavle pointed to the direction of the bodies. The poem finishes with; "O wretch! Evil is your fortune!If I, a wretch, were to grasp a green pine,Even the green pine would wither." Pavle Orlović
Pavle Orlović ( sr-cyr, Павле Орловић) is a semi-mythological hero of the Serbian epic poetry#Corpu, Kosovo cycle of Serbian epic poetry; he was a Serbian knight, one of the military commanders under Lazar of Serbia, Prince Lazar that fell at the Battle of Kosovo (1389) against the Ottoman Empire. According to folklore, Orlović was the son of ''voivode'' Vuk Crnogorac, Vuk Orle, the Lord of Soko Grad (Ljubovija), Soko Grad on the Drina. Uroš Predić
Uroš Predić ( sr-Cyrl, Урош Предић, ; Orlovat, 7 December 1857 – Belgrade, 12 February 1953) was a Serbian Realist painter. Predić is perhaps best known for his early works depicting ordinary people, as well as his many portraits. Biography He was born in Orlovat, and attended primary school in Crepaja. After finishing his secondary education in Pančevo (this school was later named after him), he went to Vienna to study at the academy in 1876. Mabel Annie St Clair Stobart ( Boulton; 3 February 1862 – 7 December 1954) was a British suffragist and aid-worker. She created and commanded all-women medical units to serve in the Balkan Wars and the First World War. She became the first woman to achieve the rank of Major in any national army. Edgar Erskine Hume CBE FRSE MD (26 December 1889 – 24 January 1952) was an American physician, Major General in the U.S Army medical corps, writer and amateur ornithologist.
