Reclaim The Block
Reclaim the Block is a grassroots organization founded in 2018 and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. The group organized protest and started petitions to pressure the Minneapolis City Council to divest money from the Minneapolis Police Department to be spent instead on subsidized housing, addiction resources, youth homelessness causes and crime prevention programs. They also invest in these causes. Instead of the police department, the group support community-based safety initiatives. In some cases, the group has been partially successful in its lobbying for divestment of the police department's budget. In December 2018, $1million planned for the police department was instead allocated to violence prevention programs, including youth violence prevention programs and support for survivors of domestic violence. A grassroots movement is one that uses the people in a given district, region or community as the basis for a political or economic movement. Grassroots movements and organizations use collective action from the local level to effect change at the local, regional, national or international level. Grassroots movements are associated with bottom-up, rather than top-down decision making, and are sometimes considered more natural or spontaneous than more traditional power structures. Grassroots movements, using self-organization, encourage community members to contribute by taking responsibility and action for their community. Black Visions Collective
Black Visions Collective (BLVC) is an American nonprofit organization for black liberation based in Minnesota, founded in December 2017. The group intersects with transgender and LGBTQ communities. Active in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area, BLVC has been involved in Black Lives Matter protests. It has lobbied for part of the Minneapolis Police Department budget to be diverted to programs that support people experiencing youth homelessness, opioid dependency, and mental health issues. In 2019, BLVC received a grant from the Minneapolis Climate Action and Racial Equity Fund to develop an environmental justice leadership panel of people of color and indigenous people. 2021 Minneapolis Question 2
The police abolition movement gained momentum in the U.S. city of Minneapolis during protests of the murder of George Floyd in 2020 and culminated in the failed Question 2 ballot measure in 2021 to replace the city’s police department with a public safety department. The measure would have removed minimum staffing levels for sworn officers, renamed the Minneapolis Police Department as the Minneapolis Department of Public Safety, and shifted oversight of the new agency from the mayor’s office to the city council. It required the support of 51 percent of voters in order to pass. Minnesota Freedom Fund
The Minnesota Freedom Fund is a non-profit organization that operates a bail fund. It was founded in 2016 and is based in the U.S. city of Minneapolis. The organization pays bail for people who have been arrested and are awaiting trial. Initially a small organization with a $100,000 in financial assets by 2017, the organization raised $40million in 2020, following the murder of George Floyd. By May 2021, the organization had spent $19million largely on posting bail for local cases. Money returns to the organization when a person appears in court and it can be reallocated to other bail posts. On , George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, was murdered in the U.S. city of Minneapolis by Derek Chauvin, a 44-year-old white police officer.
