Rebecca Vaughan House
Rebecca Vaughan House is a historic home and farm located at Courtland, Southampton County, Virginia. It was built about 1800, and is a -story, three-bay, four room, frame dwelling. It has a pressed metal shingle gable roof with five dormers. The house was moved to its present site in 2004, and is located on the grounds of the Southampton Agriculture & Forestry Museum and Heritage Village, administered by the Southampton Historical Society. The house was the last house during the Nat Turner's Rebellion of August 21 through 23, 1831, at which Nat Turner and his enslaved followers killed residents during their journey through the southwestern portion of Southampton County. an''Accompanying four photos''/ref> Moved from its original location, the house has been restored. Courtland, Virginia
Courtland is an incorporated town in Southampton County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,295 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Southampton County. History Originally named "Jerusalem" by the first colonists to settle in the region, the town was given its present name in 1888. It served as Southampton County's only town through the 18th century. The town was formed in 1791 on the north shore of the Nottoway River, on a parcel of ten acres (40,000 m2) beside the courthouse, and has been the county seat since then. In 1831, the town became well known as the site of the trials and subsequent executions of Nat Turner and some of his cohort who had planned a major slave rebellion. Southampton County is a county located on the southern border of the Commonwealth of Virginia. North Carolina is to the south. As of the 2020 census, the population was 17,996. Its county seat is Courtland. History In the early 17th century, the explorer Captain John Smith founded the settlement of Jamestown; in the next decades of the colony's history, Jamestown settlers explorer and began settling the regions adjacent to Hampton Roads. The Virginia Colony was divided into eight shires (or counties) with a total population of approximately 5,000 inhabitants in 1634. Most of Southampton County was originally part of Warrosquyoake Shire. The shires were soon to be called counties. In 1637 Warrosquyoake Shire was renamed Isle of Wight County. Nat Turner's Rebellion, historically known as the Southampton Insurrection, was a rebellion of enslaved Virginians that took place in Southampton County, Virginia, in August 1831.Schwarz, Frederic D.1831 Nat Turner's Rebellion" ''American Heritage'', August/September 2006. " Led by Nat Turner, the rebels killed between 55 and 65 White people, making it the deadliest slave revolt in U.S. history."
