Split Enz
Split Enz were a New Zealand rock band formed in Auckland in 1972 by Tim Finn and Phil Judd and had a variety of other members during its existence. Originally started as a folk-oriented group with quirky art rock stylings, the band built a strong regional following, noted for their outlandish costumes and makeup. After Tim Finn's brother Neil joined as co-lead vocalist and songwriter, the band came to embrace a more streamlined and pop-oriented approach and became pioneers of new wave. The band achieved worldwide indie stardom in the 1980s, with particular success in New Zealand, Canada and Australia. Neil Finn
Neil Mullane Finn (born 27 May 1958) is a New Zealand singer-songwriter and musician who is known for being a member of Crowded House, Split Enz (which he co-fronted with brother Tim), and Fleetwood Mac. Finn rose to prominence in the late 1970s with Split Enz and wrote many of the band's most successful songs, including " One Step Ahead", "History Never Repeats", " I Got You", and "Message to My Girl". After Split Enz broke up in 1984, Finn founded Crowded House with Split Enz's final drummer Paul Hester in 1985 and served as the band's lead singer. The group achieved international success in 1987 when they released the single "Don't Dream It's Over", written by Finn. After Crowded House disbanded in 1996, Finn and his brother released two albums as the Finn Brothers, before reforming Crowded House in 2006. "One Step Ahead" is a 1980 song by New Zealand art rock group Split Enz. It was released November 1980 as the lead single from their sixth studio album '' Waiata''. After Split Enz's dissolution in 1984, singer Neil Finn continued to perform "One Step Ahead" with his next group Crowded House, in particular, the group performed the song live at their 1987 concert in Daytona known as ''Spring Break '87''. The single's b-side "In the Wars" was recorded in the ''Waiata'' recording sessions, however was not originally released as a track on the album, though was later appended as track twelve in the album's 2006 re-release. Music video The video clip for the song was one of the first ever videos screened on MTV. Neil Finn described the song as, "about ambition, temptation, being distracted, following your nose and not letting anything get in your way". "I Walk Away" is a song written by Neil Finn, and originally recorded by Finn's group Split Enz. It was released in September 1984 as the lead single from their tenth and final studio album ''See Ya 'Round'', and was a chart hit in New Zealand and Australia. Finn's next group, Crowded House, re-recorded the song for the North American version of their self-titled debut album of 1986. (''See Ya 'Round'' was not issued in the U.S., and therefore the song "I Walk Away" was new to U.S. audiences.) "I Walk Away" was not included on the original Australian/NZ release of ''Crowded House'', but all later re-issues of the album in all countries include "I Walk Away" as a standard track. The Crowded House version of the song is slightly rewritten from the original Split Enz version, and features a different verse. Six Months In A Leaky Boat
"Six Months in a Leaky Boat" is a song by New Zealand art rock group Split Enz. It was released in May 1982 as the second single from the group's seventh studio album, ''Time and Tide''. The title is a reference to the time it took pioneers to sail to New Zealand (hence the reference to Aotearoa and ''The Tyranny of Distance'' - a history by Geoffrey Blainey), and a metaphor that refers to lead singer Tim Finn's nervous breakdown. The song became a top-10 hit in Australia, New Zealand and Canada, going on to be voted the fifth-best New Zealand song ever in the 2001 Australasian Performing Right Association list. Anthony Edward Charles Rayner (born 19 November 1952) is a New Zealand musician who spent twelve years as a keyboardist in the band Split Enz. He has also played in the groups Orb, Space Waltz, Crowded House, The Makers, The Angels in 1986-1987 and 801. Rayner has released two solo albums. The first, ''Horse'', was an instrumental offering released in 1995, recorded entirely at Rayner's home studio in Melbourne, Australia. The second was entitled ''Play it Straight'', a play on a Philip Judd Split Enz song called ''Play it Strange'' that was a particular favourite of Rayner's during the mid- to late-1970s. The song was not released at the time, but was played live when Judd rejoined the band in 1977. Brian Timothy Finn (born 25 June 1952) is a New Zealand singer and musician. His musical career includes forming 1970s and 1980s New Zealand rock group Split Enz, a number of solo albums, temporary membership in his brother Neil's band Crowded House and joint efforts with Neil Finn as the Finn Brothers.
