Reallexikon Der Germanischen Altertumskunde
''Germanische Altertumskunde Online'', formerly called ''Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde'', is a German encyclopedia of the study of Germanic history and cultures, as well as the cultures that were in close contact with them. The first edition of the ''Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde'' appeared in four volumes between 1911 and 1919, edited by Johannes Hoops. The second edition, under the auspices of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities, was edited by Heinrich Beck (from vol 1, 1968/72), Heiko Steuer (from vol. 8, 1991/94), Rosemarie Müller (from 1992), and Dieter Geuenich (from vol. 13, 1999), and was published by Walter de Gruyter in 35 volumes between 1968 and 2008. In 2010, the most recent version was published, now renamed ''Germanische Altertumskunde Online''. Johannes Hoops
Johannes Hoops (born 20 July 1865 - 14 April 1949) was a German philologist who was Professor of English philology at the University of Heidelberg. He is best known as the publisher of the first edition of the ''Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde'' (1911-1919). Biography Johannes Hoops was born in Bremen, Germany on 20 July 1865. He initially studied mathematics and the natural sciences at the universities of Jena and Freiburg, and philology and business. He gained his PhD at the University of Freiburg in 1889 with a dissertation on Old English plant names. Hoops taught at the University of Tübingen from 1893 to 1896. Since 1896, Hoops was Associate Professor, and from 1902 Professor, of English philology at the University of Heidelberg. Heinrich Beck (born 2 April 1929 - 5 June 2019) was a German philologist who specialized in Germanic studies. A Professor of Ancient German and Nordic Studies at Saarland University and later the University of Bonn, Beck was a co-editor of the second edition of ''Reallexikon der Germanischen Altertumskunde'' and one of the world's leading experts on early Germanic culture. Heiko Steuer (born 30 October 1939) is a German archaeologist, notable for his research into social and economic history in early Europe. He serves as co-editor of Germanische Altertumskunde Online. Career Heiko Steuer was born on 30 October, 1939, in Braunschweig, Germany. From 1960 until 1969 he studied in Göttingen and Tübingen, first studying mathematics and physics, and then prehistory and early history. In 1976 he was appointed director of the Kölnischen Stadtmuseums ( de), the Cologne City Museum; he held the position until 1984. During this time, in 1979, Steuer habilitated himself, on studies of prehistory and early history at the Ruhr University Bochum. Dieter Geuenich (born 17 February 1943) is a German historian who specializes in the history of Germanic peoples. Biography Dieter Geuenich was born on 17 February 1943 in Bad Honnef, Germany. He studied history, Germanistics, theology and philosophy at the universities of Bonn and Münster, and received his PhD at Münster in 1972 under the supervision of Karl Schmid. From 1972 to 1982, Geuenich was a research assistant in history at the University of Freiburg. Career Brather received his PhD in archaeology from the Humboldt University of Berlin in 1995 with a thesis '' Feldberger Keramik und frühe Slawen: Studien zur nordwestslawischen Keramik der Karolingerzeit''. Patzold is Professor of Medieval History at the University of Tübingen and specializes in the study of the study of political and religious history of the Carolingian Empire.
