Razgrad
Razgrad ( bg, Разград ) is a city in Northeastern Bulgaria in the valley of the Beli Lom river that falls within the historical and geographical region of Ludogorie (Deliorman). It is an administrative center of Razgrad Province. Etymology The suffix "grad" means city in Bulgarian, while the origin and the meaning of the first part "raz" is obscure. During the Second Bulgarian Empire, around the present city there was a settlement, mentioned by the names of ''Hrasgrad'', ''Hrazgrad'' and ''Hrizgrad. These names come from the name of the Bulgar and Slavic god Hors. History Razgrad was built upon the ruins of the Ancient Roman town of Abritus on the banks of the Beli Lom river. Abritus was built on a Thracian settlement of the 4th-5th century BC of unknown name. Several bronze coins of the Thracian king Seuthes III (330-300 BC) and pottery were found, as well as artifacts from other rulers and a sacrificial altar of Hercules. Ibrahim Pasha Mosque
The Ibrahim Pasha Mosque, ( bg, Ибрахим паша джамия, tr, İbrahim Paşa Camisi), is the third-largest mosque on the Balkan Peninsula and the second-largest in Bulgaria. Located in the town of Razgrad, the mosque is one of the most exquisite examples of Ottoman classical architecture. History First Mosque of Ibrahim Pasha The Mosque of Ibrahim Pasha was a mosque built by Ibrahim Pasha of Parga in Razgrad in 1533, and it is believed to be the first-ever congregational mosque in Razgrad. The 1533 Deed of Trust of Ibrahim Pasha testifies on the existence of such a temple and provides information on its appearance, architecture, and staff: the mosque was built upon a firm foundation and had one-of-a-kind columns. Razgrad Clock Tower
The clock tower in the city of Razgrad, northeastern Bulgaria, is about high and dates to the Ottoman era. It is among the vast number of clock towers spreading in Bulgaria after the rise of the first clock towers in the Western Balkans during the second half of the 16th century, the earliest evidence of which was the clock tower in Plovdiv in 1611. The clock towers in Bulgaria performed multiple tasks as they were used not only for timekeeping, but for signaling danger and fire emergency, and as watch towers for military purposes and defense. In the 18th, and especially the 19th, centuries, these towers served mainly craftsmen and traders in their efforts to keep work hours in check to prevent competition and work exploitation. Abritus
Abritus (Abrittus) was an impressive Roman walled city and one of the biggest urban centres in the province of Moesia Inferior. Its remains are in the Archaeological Park of Razgrad. History A Thracian settlement of the 3rd–4th century BC has been found on the north bank of the Beli Lom river, and an early Roman settlement extended it in the late 1st or early 2nd century AD. At the end of the 1st century AD a Roman military camp was built, and in the 2nd century the Cohors II Lucensium of the Legio XI Claudia (based at Durostorum) was stationed here. In 251 during the Gothic invasions the Romans suffered a disastrous defeat and the death of the Emperor Decius and his son Herennius Etruscus at the Battle of Abritus, which took place about northwest of Abritus, in the valley of the river Beli Lom, to the south of the village of Dryanovets. Razgrad Peak
Razgrad Peak ( bg, връх Разград, vrah Razgrad, ) is an ice-covered peak rising to 550 m in Breznik Heights, Greenwich Island, Antarctica. The peak is located 740 m southeast of Terter Peak, 1.7 km southwest of Momchil Peak, 2.7 km west of the summit of Viskyar Ridge, and 1.51 km north-northeast of the coastal point formed by Ephraim Bluff (Bulgarian topographic survey Tangra 2004/05). Vazovo Thracian Pegasus
Vazovo ( bg, Вазово, formerly Ески Балабанлар, tr, Eski Balabanlar) is a village in northeastern Bulgaria, part of the Isperih Municipality of Razgrad Province, located in the central part of the Ludogorie region. Vazovo has an area of 20.843 km2. The closest villages to Vazovo are Sveshtari to the south and Raynino to the north. In the period 1913-1916 and again between 1919 and 1940, when Southern Dobrudzha was under Romanian control, the Bulgarian-Romanian border passed just north of the village. Battle Of Abrittus
The Battle of Abritus, also known as the Battle of Forum Terebronii, occurred near Abritus (modern Razgrad) in the Roman province of Moesia Inferior in the summer of 251. It was fought between the Romans and a federation of Goths, Gothic and Scythians#Migration period, Scythian tribesmen under the Gothic king Cniva. The Roman army of three legions was soundly defeated, and Roman emperors Decius and his son Herennius Etruscus were both killed in battle. They became the first Roman emperors to be killed by a foreign enemy. The Ludogorie ( bg, Лудогорие, usually used with a definite article, Лудогорието, ''Ludogorieto'') or Deliorman (''Делиорман'', tr, Deli Orman, lit=mad forest and Bulgarian: lud - "mad", "crazy" and gora - "forest"), is a region in northeastern Bulgaria stretching over the plateau of the same name. Major cities in the region are Targovishte, Razgrad, Dulovo, Novi Pazar, Pliska, Preslav and Isperih. Herennius Etruscus
Quintus Herennius Etruscus Messius Decius (died June 251) was briefly Roman emperor in 251, ruling jointly under his father Decius. His father was proclaimed emperor by his troops in September 249 while in Pannonia and Moesia, in opposition to Emperor Philip the Arab. Decius defeated Philip in battle, and was then proclaimed emperor by the Roman Senate. Herennius Etruscus was elevated to in 250, then further raised to in May 251. When the Goths, under Cniva, invaded the Danubian provinces, Herennius Etruscus was sent with a vanguard, followed by the main body of Roman troops, led by Decius. They ambushed Cniva at the Battle of Nicopolis ad Istrum in 250, routing him, before being ambushed and routed themselves at the Battle of Beroe.
