Raymond Lygo
Admiral Sir Raymond Derek Lygo, (15 March 1924 – 7 March 2012) was a Royal Navy officer who served as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff from 1975 to 1978. Naval career Educated at Ilford County High School and Clark's College, Bromley, Lygo joined the Royal Navy at HMS St. Vincent (Fleet Air Arm basic training establishment in Gosport, Hampshire) in 1942 during the Second World War.Debrett's People of Today 1994 He was appointed the commanding officer of the frigate in 1961, the frigate in 1967 and the aircraft carrier in 1969. While in command of the latter in 1971, the ''Ark Royal'' collided with a Soviet cruiser that was shadowing her during an exercise in the Mediterranean. Damage to both vessels was slight, though two Soviet crewmen went missing. Lygo was cleared of any responsibility in the subsequent inquiry. Admiral Sir John Devereux Treacher, (23 September 1924 – 30 April 2018) was a senior officer in the Royal Navy who served as Commander-in-Chief Fleet from 1975 to 1977. Naval career Educated at St Paul's School, Treacher was commissioned into the Royal Navy in 1941. He served in the Second World War and escaped the sinking of his ship. He trained as a naval aviator and flew Supermarine Seafire with 800 Naval Air Squadron in the Korean War. He was promoted to captain in 1962 and went on to command . The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". The Fleet Air Arm (FAA) is one of the five fighting arms of the Royal Navy and is responsible for the delivery of naval air power both from land and at sea. The Fleet Air Arm operates the F-35 Lightning II for maritime strike, the AW159 Wildcat and AW101 Merlin for commando and anti-submarine warfare and the BAE Hawk as an aggressor.
