Ray Lawrence (born 1948) is an Australian film director, best known for his 2001 film ''Lantana''. Overview All his films are made in Australia with predominantly Australian casts. He has made only three films in nearly four decades, yet they have been some of the most critically acclaimed works in Australian cinema during that time. He is famous for his one-take shoots and use of natural light. He makes commercials in between films. Early life Lawrence was born in London, England, the son of a painter who painted the royal coaches at Buckingham Palace, and later spray painted London buses for double the salary. He moved to Australia with his family in 1958 at age 11 and they settled in Victor Harbor, South Australia after spending three years in a migrant hostel in Gawler. Ray Lawrence (born Ray Skreprich; August 19, 1927) is a former bandleader, record company executive, record producer and personal manager. Biography Lawrence's father was born in Wickhaven, Pennsylvania and his mother was born in Uzhorod, Bohemia. Ray's grandfather died in the Darr Mine Disaster of 1907 in Wickhaven. After the disaster Ray's grandmother moved her children back to Uzhorod. While in Uzhorod and during World War I, Lawrence's father, although he was a United States citizen, was drafted at the age of 16 into the Austrian Army. He served as a runner (war), runner in the trench warfare, trenches. After his service he met his wife in Uzhorod, married and moved to Lorain, Ohio, Lorain, Ohio, an industrial city 30 miles west of Cleveland, Ohio on the shore of Lake Erie settled by many Eastern European immigrants. Raymond Douglas Lawrence (born 1943) is an Australian organist who is director of music at the Scots' Church, Melbourne and Teacher of the Organ at the University of Melbourne. In 1969 Lawrence completed his master's degree in music at the University of Melbourne. He then studied for two years at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (Vienna Musikhochschule) between 1969 and 1971, under the tutelage of renowned Austrian organist Anton Heiller. He founded and directs the Australian Baroque Ensemble and thAustralian Chamber Choir He also founded the Choir of Ormond College. In 1992 he was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for services to music. In the 2020 Australia Day Honours Lawrence was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for "significant service to the performing arts, particularly to chamber choirs". ''Silks and Saddles'' is a 1921 Australian silent film set in the world of horse racing that was directed by John K. Wells. Plot summary On the stud farm of Kangarooie, squatter's daughter Bobbie wants her weak brother Richard to come home for her birthday, but she prefers the charms of the city, in particular the high society adventuress, Mrs Fane.
