Raymond Berthiaume
Raymond Berthiaume (born May 9, 1931 and died June 23, 2009) was a Canadian jazz singer, musician, producer and composer from Quebec, Canada. Biography Berthiaume was born in Laval, Quebec, on May 9, 1931. He died of cancer (June 23, 2009) in Montreal (Québec) after being hospitalized for 10 days. He studied piano and saxophone at College Laval. In 1948, he created an instrumental group named The Three Bars. The owner of the bar in which they performed suggested they select a vocalist, knowing that a singer would make the group more popular. Berthiaume was chosen, and became the group's vocalist. The move seemed to work, and the group was soon hailed as the best in the city. They played in the high-class nightclub El Morocco, where Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, and Vic Damone had all performed. Laval (; ) is a city in Quebec, Canada. It is in the southwest of the province, north of Montreal. It is the largest suburb of Montreal, the third-largest city in the province after Montreal and Quebec City, and the thirteenth largest city in Canada with a population of 422,993 in 2016. Laval is geographically separated from the mainland to the north by the Rivière des Mille Îles, and from the Island of Montreal to the south by the Rivière des Prairies. "Sweet Lorraine" is a popular song with music by Cliff Burwell and words by Mitchell Parish that was published in 1928 and has become a jazz standard. It is written in F major and has an AABA structure. A version by Teddy Wilson charted in October 1935, peaking at #17. Frank Sinatra recorded the song on December 17, 1946. "What Can I Do?" ("Mais qu'est-ce que j'ai?") is a French popular song composed in 1947 by Henri Betti with the lyrics by Édith Piaf. The English lyrics were written in 1949 by Harold Rome. Story In 1947, Édith Piaf and Yves Montand had just quit amicably and Édith Piaf had written the lyrics of a song in memory of their love story whose departure was "Mais qu'est-ce que j'ai à tant l'aimer que ça me donne envie de crier!". She asked Henri Betti to put the music on his lyrics inspired by the style of Yves Montand.
