Ray Cresp
Raymond Maurice Cresp (25 August 1928 - 20 August 2022) was an international speedway rider from Australia. He earned 4 international caps for the Australia national speedway team and 6 caps for the Great Britain national speedway team. Speedway career Cresp was a professional boxer as a teenager before taking up road racing and moto cross. He was mentored by Jack Biggs before he moved to the UK in 1956. He rode in the top tier of British Speedway from 1956 to 1966, riding for various clubs. He gained four Australian caps and six British caps (when riders from Oceania were allowed to represent Britain. Cresp reached the final of the Speedway World Championship in the 1961 Individual Speedway World Championship. He was a builder by trade and when he returned to Australia he enjoyed fly-fishing. Eastbourne Eagles
The Eastbourne Eagles were a British speedway team, based at Arlington Stadium, near Eastbourne, England, that raced in the SGB Championship. History Speedway was initially introduced to Eastbourne in 1929. During their first league season they were the 1947 Speedway National League Division Three champions. Despite winning the title at their first attempt they were forced to close down due to a petrol ban enforced at their Arlington Stadium. They decided to transfer their team to Hastings Saxons and at the beginning of 1948 the Speedway Control Board granted a licence to Hastings to stage speedway. Eastbourne would not compete again in the league until they joined the Southern Area League in 1954. In 1957, they won the 1959 Southern Area League which was the second division league at the time but once again did not compete in league action for another decade. The 1961 Individual Speedway World Championship was the 16th edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. The final was held outside of Wembley and England for the first time when on the 15 September Ove Fundin retained his title in his home country of Sweden. It was the first time a rider had won three titles and Sweden produced a clean sweep of podium places with Björn Knutsson and Göte Nordin finishing second and third.
