This is a list in alphabetical order of cricketers who have played for Derbyshire County Cricket Club in top-class matches since it was founded in 1870. Derbyshire was a first-class team from 1871 to 1887 but was then demoted until its status was restored in 1895. Derbyshire have been a List A team since the beginning of limited overs cricket in 1963 and a top-class Twenty20 team since the inauguration of the Twenty20 Cup in 2003. The details are the player's usual name followed by the years in which he was active as a Derbyshire player and then his name is given as it would appear on match scorecards. Note that many players represented other top-class teams besides Derbyshire. Current players are shown as active to the latest season in which they played for the club. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. Richard Allsop
Richard Allsop (10 June 1849 – 20 March 1908) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire County Cricket Club between 1872 and 1874. Allsop was born at Wirksworth, Derbyshire, the son of Samuel Allsop, a journeyman joiner, and his wife Ann. By 1871, he was a joiner himself, living with the family at St John Street. He played club cricket for Wirksworth and Burton Cricket Clubs before making his first-class debut for Derbyshire in the 1872 season against Lancashire. Harry Bagshaw
Harry Bagshaw (1 September 1859 – 31 January 1927), christened Henry Bagshaw, was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1887 and 1902 and was also a cricket umpire. Bagshaw was born at Foolow, Derbyshire, where he became a lead miner. He played for the Derbyshire Colts' team in 1880. His first-class career with Derbyshire began in the 1887 season when, as a 28-year-old, he played against Marylebone Cricket Club. Derbyshire lost first-class status in the 1888 season, but Bagshaw continued to take part in matches between future first-class sides and Derbyshire and was top scorer for the club in the 1892 and 1893 seasons. Derbyshire's matches were accorded first-class status again in the 1894 season. Bagshaw took part in his first County Championship match when Derbyshire joined the Championship in the 1895 season. William Bagguley
William Bagguley (9 September 1866 – 18 April 1936) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire in 1905. Bagguley was born in Ruddington, the son of Robert Bagguley, a stocking framework knitter and his wife Martha. Bagguley followed his father's occupation from a young age. Bagguley made a single first-class appearance for Derbyshire, during the 1905 season, against Sussex. From the lower order, he scored 5 runs in the only innings in which he batted. Richard Baggallay (cricketer)
Richard Romer Claude Baggallay (4 May 1884 – 12 December 1975) was an English army officer and cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1912 and 1919 and captained the side in 1913, 1914 and 1919. Bagallay was born at Kensington the son of Claude Baggallay K.C. a barrister of Wilderwick, East Grinstead, Sussex. He was educated at Marlborough College and joined the 11th Hussars. Baggallay made his cricketing debut for Derbyshire in the 1912 season playing in two matches, the first a draw against the Australians in which he made little impression. He was captain in the 1913 season when Derbyshire finished 13th in the table and again in the 1914 season when they finished 12th. He then fought in World War I between 1914 and 1919. Mohammad Azharuddin
Mohammad Azharuddin (born 8 February 1963) is an Indian politician and a former international cricketer and former captain of India national cricket team. He is the working president of the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee and was the Member of Parliament (India), member of parliament for Moradabad (Lok Sabha Constituency), Moradabad. Azeem Rafiq
Azeem Rafiq ( ur, عظیم رفیق; born 27 February 1991) is a British Asian cricketer who played professionally in England for Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Thomas Attenborough
Thomas Attenborough (18 July 1833 – 21 January 1907) was an English cricketer who played for Derbyshire between 1871 and 1874. Maynard Ashcroft
Edward Maynard Ashcroft (27 September 1875 – 26 February 1955) was an English doctor and cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1897 and 1906 and captained the Derbyshire team in 1904. Early life Ashcroft was born at Longsight, Manchester, son of Henry N Ashcroft, a Manchester merchant and his wife Charlotte. They lived at 14 Birch Side Moss Side. Ashcroft studied medicine at Owens College, Manchester, and became RMO at Dewsbury Smallpox Hospital. He later became assistant MOH at Derby. Cricket career Ashcroft made his cricket debut for Derbyshire in 1897 and remained with the team until 1906. Thomas Armstrong (Derbyshire Cricketer)
Thomas Riley Armstrong (13 October 1909 – 6 February 2000) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire from 1929 to 1950 Armstrong was born at Clay Cross, Derbyshire. He made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1929 season against Worcestershire in June when he bowled without taking a wicket and made 1 run in each innings. That was his only game that year and he only played two games in the 1930 season but took 4 wickets in them. In the 1931 season he began to play more regularly and in the 1932 season managed 5 for 27 against Warwickshire. In the 1933 season he reached a peak with 36 wickets and 7 for 57 against Somerset and 7 for 87 against Northamptonshire. Christopher Armishaw
Christopher John Armishaw (22 September 1952 – 12 March 2016) was an English cricketer who played List A cricket for Derbyshire. Armishaw was born in Willington, Derbyshire and joined Derbyshire in the season of 1970. He made occasional appearances for the Second XI over three years, and appeared in three Warwick Pool matches in 1972 and 1973. William Antliff
William Norris Antliff (23 August 1848 – 29 April 1909) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire in 1880. Antliff was born in Bottesford, Leicestershire and became a railway clerk.British Census 1881 RG11 3402/12 p18 He played for Derbyshire Colts against the club in the 1879 season, although he was aged 30 at the time. He played two games for Derbyshire during the 1880 season. The first match was against the touring Australians in May and as it was completed in two days, the sides played an extra one innings match when Antliff made 37.
