Ravensworth Castle (North Yorkshire)
Ravensworth Castle is a ruined 14th-century castle in the village of Ravensworth, North Yorkshire, England. It has been designated a Grade I listed building by English Heritage. History The earliest reference to the castle records a visit from King John in 1201. The remaining parts of Ravensworth Castle date from the late 14th century, when it belonged to Henry, 1st Baron FitzHugh. In 1391 he enclosed around the castle, creating a park. The castle was gradually dismantled, starting in the 16th century, and the stone was used for other buildings in the area. Ravensworth Castle and Park Wall were given a Grade I listed building designation by English Heritage on 4 February 1969. The Grade I listing is for buildings "of exceptional interest, sometimes considered to be internationally important". Ravensworth
Ravensworth is a village and civil parish in the Holmedale valley, within the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. It is approximately north-west of Richmond and from Darlington. The parish has a population of 255, according to the 2011 census. Ravensworth was historically situated in the North Riding of Yorkshire, but has been a part of North Yorkshire since 1974 as a result of the Local Government Act of 1972. The village has ancient origins, dating back to the time of Viking settlements. In it are the remains of the 14th century, Grade-1-listed Ravensworth Castle, the ancestral home of the FitzHugh family. After the FitzHugh line came to an end, the castle was abandoned. Beginning in the mid-16th century, it began to be dismantled, but the gatehouse remains almost wholly intact.
