From 1987 to 1995, he served four terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. Early life Ravenel was born on March 29, 1927, to Arthur Ravenel, Sr. and Mary Allen Boykin. During the waning days of World War II, the Charleston-born Ravenel enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1945 to 1946. He received a bachelor of science degree from the College of Charleston in 1950, then became realtor and general contractor. Beatrice Ravenel
Beatrice Witte Ravenel (August 24, 1870 – March 15, 1956) was an American poet associated with the Charleston Renaissance in South Carolina. Early life Beatrice Witte was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on Aug. 24, 1870, the third of six daughters of Charlotte Sophia (Reeves) Witte, who was of French Huguenot descent, and Charles Otto Witte, a German-born banker and businessman. In her teens, her family lived in a house that is now the Ashley Hall school. She showed early intellectual promise and was educated at the Charleston Female Seminary. In 1889, she went on to study at the women's annex of Harvard University, the Society for Collegiate Instruction of Women (shortly to be renamed Radcliffe College). Douglas Conner Ravenel (born 1947) is an American mathematician known for work in algebraic topology. Life Ravenel received his PhD from Brandeis University in 1972 under the direction of Edgar H. Brown, Jr. with a thesis on exotic characteristic classes of spherical fibrations. From 1971 to 1973 he was a C. L. E. Moore instructor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and in 1974/75 he visited the Institute for Advanced Study. He became an assistant professor at Columbia University in 1973 and at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1976, where he was promoted to associate professor in 1978 and professor in 1981. From 1977 to 1979 he was a Sloan Fellow. Since 1988 he has been a professor at the University of Rochester. Henry William Ravenel (May 19, 1814 – July 17, 1887) was an American planter and botanist. He studied fungi and cryptogams in South Carolina, discovering a large number of new species. The genus '' Ravenelia'' is named after him, along with many of the species he discovered.
