''Rated G'' is the third album by the 5th Ward Boyz, released on November 28, 1995 through Rap-a-Lot Records. Producer Mike Dean, who had produced the group's previous two albums, returned to produce the album with the three members of the 5th Ward Boyz co-producing the album. N.O. Joe, who also produced the group's first two albums did not contribute to this album. ''Rated G'' peaked at 189 on the ''Billboard'' 200 and 35 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, their lowest peak position on either chart. Despite the album's lack of commercial success, the album was met with positive reviews. Allmusic gave the album 4.5 stars out of a possible 5, saying "Rated G remains enjoyable. It is the work of talented, but not inspired, imitators and will do if ''The Chronic'' and ''Doggystyle'' are sounding stale". 5th Ward Boyz
5th Ward Boyz is an American southern hip hop trio, based out of Houston, Texas. Their name is derived from Houston's Fifth Ward, Houston, Fifth Ward. The group signed to Rap-A-Lot Records following the Geto Boys' popularity on the label. The group originally consisted of Andre "007" Barnes and Eric "E-Rock" Taylor, with Richard "Lo Life" Nash joining the group following his release from prison for their second album, ''Gangsta Funk''. The Chronic
''The Chronic'' is the debut studio album by the American hip hop producer and rapper Dr. Dre. It was released on December 15, 1992, by his record label Death Row Records and distributed by Interscope Records. Recording sessions took place in June 1992 at Death Row Studios in Los Angeles and at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood. ''The Chronic'' was Dr. Dre's first solo album after he departed the hip hop group N.W.A and its label Ruthless Records over a financial dispute. It includes insults towards Ruthless and its owner, the former N.W.A member Eazy-E. The Bar-Kays are an American funk band formed in 1964. ''Doggystyle'' is the debut studio album by American rapper Snoop Dogg (then known as Snoop Doggy Dogg). It was released on November 23, 1993, by Death Row Records and Interscope Records. G-funk
G-funk, short for gangsta funk, is a sub-genre of gangsta rap that emerged from the West Coast scene in the late 1980s. The genre is heavily influenced by 1970s psychedelic funk (P-funk) sound of artists such as Parliament-Funkadelic. Characteristics G-funk (which uses funk with an artificially altered tempo) incorporates multi-layered and melodic synthesizers, slow hypnotic grooves, a deep bass, heavy use of the snare drum, background female vocals, the extensive sampling of P-Funk tunes, and a high-pitched portamento saw wave synthesizer lead. It is typically set at a tempo of anywhere between 80 to 100 BPM. The lyrical content depended on the artist and could consist of sex, drug use (especially marijuana), love for a city/neighborhood, love for friends and relaxing words.
