Rastatt Tunnel
The Rastatt Tunnel is a railway tunnel that is currently under construction on the Karlsruhe–Basel high-speed railway under Rastatt in the German state of Baden-Württemberg. Once complete, the line will be used by long-distance passenger services and freight. It will form part of the Rotterdam– Genoa corridor; the tunnel is also part of the Main line for Europe (''Magistrale für Europa'' in German and ''Magistrale européenne'' in French; Paris– Budapest). Having been under consideration since the 1970s, and given planning approval during 1996, the tunnel's construction was delayed by decades due to a lack of financing. During 2013, construction finally commenced with the awarding of a contract to ''Arbeitsgemeinschaft Tunnel Rastatt'' ("Rastatt tunnel construction community"). Karlsruhe–Basel High-speed Railway
The Karlsruhe–Basel high-speed railway (''Ausbau- und Neubaustrecke Karlsruhe–Basel'', literally "Upgraded and new line Karlsruhe–Basel") is a new line being built on the route of the Mannheim–Karlsruhe–Basel railway (Rhine Valley Railway). As a result of the project, the railway through the Rhine Valley is being upgraded to four continuous tracks and its operational efficiency will be increased as a result of the segregation of the various transport flows. The travel time for passenger services between Karlsruhe and Basel is to be shortened by 31 minutes. The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (german: Bundesministerium für Digitales und Verkehr, ), abbreviated BMDV, is a cabinet-level ministry of the Federal Republic of Germany. Piston Effect
Piston effect refers to the forced-air flow inside a tunnel or shaft caused by moving vehicles. It is one of numerous phenomena that engineers and designers must consider when developing a range of structures. Cause In open air, when a vehicle travels along, air pushed aside can move in any direction except into the ground. Inside a tunnel, air is confined by the tunnel walls to move along the tunnel. Behind the moving vehicle, as air has been pushed away, suction is created, and air is pulled to flow into the tunnel. In addition, because of fluid viscosity, the surface of the vehicle drags the air to flow with vehicle, a force experienced as skin drag by the vehicle. This movement of air by the vehicle is analogous to the operation of a mechanical piston as inside a reciprocating compressor gas pump, hence the name "piston effect". Bundesstraße 462
The Bundesstraße 462 (B 462) is a German ''Bundesstraße'' or federal road. It runs from the Upper Rhine Plain near Rastatt for about through the northern Black Forest to Rottweil. The section from Rastatt to Freudenstadt, which runs through the Murg valley to Baiersbronn, has been known since the 1960s as the Black Forest Valleys Road (''Schwarzwald-Tälerstraße'') and, along with the B 500 (Black Forest High Road), is one of the tourist routes in the Black Forest. Both roads meet in Freudenstadt. In 2001 the section from Rastatt to Gaggenau was widened into a dual carriageway as far as Schloss Bad Rotenfels (Landesakademie) and a further widening to the centre of Gaggenau is planned. Bietigheim is a village in the district of Rastatt in Baden-Württemberg in Southwestern Germany. It is located east of the Rhine river and thus the border to France, west of the Black Forest (more precisely the Northern Black Forest), south of the city of Karlsruhe and north of the city of Rastatt. Durmersheim is a small town in the district of Rastatt, Baden-Württemberg, Southwest Germany and has a population of 12,112 (2020).
