Rasmus Nellemann
Rasmus Nellemann (2 March 1923 – 4 September 2004) was a Danish painter and illustrator. He is remembered in particular for his many abstract postage stamp designs. Biography Born in Millinge near Fåborg on the island of Funen, Nellemann was introduced to art at the Odense Technical School before attending the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (1948–53) where he studied painting under Aksel Jørgensen and Vilhelm Lundstrøm and graphic arts under Holger Jensen. In 1950, Nellemann exhibited six paintings of Millinge at the Artists Autumn Exhibition (''Kunstnernes Efterårsudstilling'') but soon concentrated on graphic arts, initially lithography, then etching. His illustrations were in a simple abstract style, full of straight lines. He also designed many postage stamps from 1960 to 1992, becoming Denmark's most productive artist in the field with 32 different designs. Abstract Art
Abstract art uses visual language of shape, form, color and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence from visual references in the world. Western art had been, from the Renaissance up to the middle of the 19th century, underpinned by the logic of perspective and an attempt to reproduce an illusion of visible reality. By the end of the 19th century many artists felt a need to create a new kind of art which would encompass the fundamental changes taking place in technology, science and philosophy. The sources from which individual artists drew their theoretical arguments were diverse, and reflected the social and intellectual preoccupations in all areas of Western culture at that time. Eckersberg Medal
The Eckersberg Medal (originally the ''Akademiets Aarsmedaille'' or Annual Academy Medal) is an annual award of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. It is named after Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg, known as the father of Danish painting. The Eckersberg Medal was created in 1883, on the 100th birthday of its namesake. Thorvaldsen Medal
The Thorvaldsen Medal (Danish: Thorvaldsens Medalje, Thorvaldsen Medaillen) is awarded annually with few exceptions to a varying number of recipients by the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and is its highest distinction within the visual arts. It is named after the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. The medal was founded in 1837 as the Exhibition Medal and awarded for talented works in the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition in the Charlottenborg Palace. In 1866, it was renamed the Thorvaldsen Exhibition Medal ( da, Thorvaldsenske Udstillings-Medaille), and from 1923 it has been known under its current name. Ledøje-Smørum
Until January 1, 2007 Ledøje-Smørum was a municipality (Danish, '' kommune'') in Copenhagen County on Zealand (''Sjælland'') island in eastern Denmark, then merged into Egedal. The municipality covered an area of 31 km2 (12 mi²) and had a total population of 10,525 (2005), northwest of nearby Copenhagen. History The last mayor of Ledøje-Smørum was Jens Jørgen Nygaard, a member of the Conservative People's Party (''Det Konservative Folkeparti'') political party. The main town and the site of its municipal council was the town of Smørum.
