Rangaswamy Peak And Pillar
Rangaswamy Peak and Pillar is a rocky column in Kotagiri, The Nilgiris District, The Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu. It is located at a distance of 20 km from Kotagiri. Rangaswamy Peak Located at , the height of Rangaswamy Peak is above and it is visible from Kodanad View Point. This is the most sacred place for the Irula people, Irulas who hold it as the home of the deity Rangaswamy. It is also known as Rangabottu and hosts an annual harvest-fertility festival. It was in this region that a DC-3 Air India plane carrying the statistician Abraham Wald crashed on 13 December 1950. The Nilgiris district () is one of the 38 List of districts of Tamil Nadu, districts in the South India, southern Indian States and union territories of India, state of Tamil Nadu. Irula People
Irula, also known as Iruliga'','' are a Dravidian ethnic group inhabiting the Indian states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. A scheduled tribe, their population in this region is estimated at around 200,000 people. People of Irula ethnicity are called ''Irular'', and speak Irula, which belongs to the Dravidian family. Etymology ''Irular'' means "dark people" in Tamil and Malayalam, from the root word ''irul'', meaning "darkness." Thurston speculated that it either referred to the darkness of the jungles which they inhabited or their dark skin complexion. Abraham Wald
Abraham Wald (; hu, Wald Ábrahám, yi, אברהם וואַלד; – ) was a Jewish Hungarian mathematician who contributed to decision theory, geometry, and econometrics and founded the field of statistical sequential analysis. One of his well-known statistical works was written during World War II on how to minimize the damage to bomber aircraft and took into account the survivorship bias in his calculations. He spent his research career at Columbia University. Life and career Wald was born on 31 October 1902 in Kolozsvár, Transylvania, in the Kingdom of Hungary. A religious Jew, he did not attend school on Saturdays, as was then required by the Hungarian school system, and so he was thus homeschooled by his parents until college.
