Randolph M. Probstfield
Randolph Michael Probstfield (November 9, 1832 – September 11, 1911) was one of the first Euro-American settlers in Clay County, Minnesota. He served in a variety of roles and was influential in the early development of the region. Probstfield was born as Michael Probstfeld in Kalt, Landkreis Mayen-Koblenz, near Koblenz, Coblenz, Germany. His first cousin was the wildlife painter Joseph Wolf. He emigrated to the United States in 1852. For several years he traveled throughout the country as well as parts of Central America. He was also for some time a resident of Saint Paul, Minnesota, Saint Paul, Minnesota. He eventually settled in the Red River Valley in 1859 in the fledgling community of Georgetown, Minnesota, Georgetown, Minnesota. Probstfield returned to Germany in the fall of 1860 upon news of his father's death, but he came back to Georgetown in June 1861. Probstfield was an active citizen of Georgetown. Clay County, Minnesota
Clay County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 65,318. Its county seat is Moorhead. Clay County is part of the Fargo, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The county was formed on March 8, 1862, although its government was not organized at that time. In 1872, the organization was effected. It was named for nineteenth-century political figure Henry Clay, member of the United States Senate from Kentucky, and US Secretary of State. The county was originally called Breckinridge, but soon (in 1862) was changed to Clay. Geography Clay County lies on the western side of Minnesota. Its western boundary line abuts the eastern boundary line of the state of North Dakota (across the Red River). The Red River flows northward along the western boundary line of the county, on its way to the Hudson Bay in Canada.
