Rancho Tía Juana, or Ti Juan was a land grant made to Santiago Arguello on March 4, 1829, by Governor José María de Echeandía. It covered 26,019.53 acres in what is now Tijuana in Tijuana Municipality in Baja California, Mexico, and parts of San Ysidro and the Tijuana River Valley, San Diego, in South San Diego in San Diego County, California. Background The property of Rancho Tía Juana was bounded on the south by the 11 league Rancho El Rosario, granted by José María de Echeandía in 1827 to Don José Manuel Machado, one of the first soldiers stationed at the Presidio of San Diego. In Alta California (now known as California) and Baja California, ranchos were concessions and land grants made by the Viceroyalty of New Spain, Spanish and History of Mexico, Mexican governments from 1775 to 1846. The Spanish concessions of land were made to retired soldiers as an inducement for them to settle in the frontier. These concessions reverted to the Spanish crown upon the death of the recipient. After independence, the Mexican government encouraged settlement in these areas by issuing much larger land grants to both native-born and naturalized Mexican citizens. José Manuel Machado
José Manuel Machado (1781 - 1852) was a Spanish soldier, ranchero, early citizen and regiador on the ayuntamiento of the Pueblo of San Diego. Biography José Manuel Machado was born in 1781, but details of his life before joining the Spanish army are unknown. The elder Machado came as a corporal of the Leather Jacket Company to garrison the Presido of San Diego in 1782. During his many years of service the younger Machado advanced rapidly in rank holding many military offices. He commanded the military guards at Mission San Luis Rey and Mission San Diego. He was involved in the founding of the mission stations at Las Flores, Pala and Temecula. In 1808, Machado was married to María Serafina Valdez, the daughter of Eugenio Valdez a fellow soldier from the garrison at Los Angeles. In the following years they would have 15 children. Kumeyaay People
The Kumeyaay, also known as 'Iipai-Tiipai or by the historical Spanish name Diegueño, is a tribe of Indigenous peoples of the Americas who live at the northern border of Baja California in Mexico and the southern border of California in the United States. They are an Indigenous people of California. The Kumeyaay language belongs to the Yuman–Cochimí language family. The Kumeyaay consist of three related groups, the 'Iipai, Tiipai, and Kamia.
