Rancho Rinconada
Rancho Rinconada is a residential neighborhood in the eastern part of Cupertino, California. It is bordered by Saratoga Creek (just west of Lawrence Expressway), Stevens Creek Boulevard, Miller Avenue and Bollinger Road. It is bordered by the West San Jose neighborhood to the east and south, central Cupertino to the west, and the city of Santa Clara to the north. Cupertino High School, Sedgwick Elementary School, and Hyde Middle School serve Rancho Rinconada. The homes in Rancho Rinconada were originally low-cost, single-story houses built in the 1950s by builders Stern & Price. These ranch houses or "ranchos" were designed by architect Cliff May and marketed under the name "Miracle House", while their landscapes were designed by landscape architect Douglas Baylis. Santa Clara Valley
The Santa Clara Valley is a geologic trough in Northern California that extends 90 miles (145 km) south–southeast from San Francisco to Hollister. The longitudinal valley is bordered on the west by the Santa Cruz Mountains and on the east by the Diablo Range; the two coastal ranges meet south of Hollister. The San Francisco Bay borders the valley to the north, and fills much of the northern third of the valley. The valley floor is an alluvial plain that formed in the graben (tectonic depression) between the San Andreas Fault to the west and the Hayward and Calaveras faults to the east. Douglas Baylis
Douglas Baylis (January 7, 1915 – November 28, 1971) was a landscape architect often credited as a founder of the "California School" of modern landscape architecture alongside contemporaries Thomas Church, Garrett Eckbo, and Robert Royston. Early life and education Baylis was born in 1915 in East Orange, New Jersey and moved to California, where he attended high school; he graduated in 1941 from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in landscape architecture, minoring in art and architecture. His professors at Berkeley included H. Leland Vaughan, John William Gregg, and Harry Shepherd. Baylis was the first to receive the student award from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA). Cliff May
Cliff May (1903–1989) was an architect practicing in California best known and remembered for developing the suburban Post-war "dream home" ( California Ranch House), and the Mid-century Modern. The Ranch-style house May built Monterey-style furniture as a young man. As a residential/building designer, May designed projects throughout Southern California, including the regions around San Diego, Los Angeles, and Santa Barbara, California. He is credited with creating the pitched-roof, low-slung California Ranch-style house in 1932. He had very little training as an architect, and never had the need to formally register as a licensed architect.
