George Burrell Ramsay (4 March 1855 – 7 October 1935) was a Scottish footballer and manager. Ramsay was the secretary and manager of Aston Villa Football Club during the club's 'Golden Age'. As a player he was the first Aston Villa captain to lift a trophy, being instrumental in establishing the club as force in the game. A pioneer of the passing game, which he learned in his native Scotland, Aston Villa became renowned for their short, quick combination passing under his leadership. His trophy haul of six League Championships and six FA Cups established Aston Villa as the most successful club in England. He has been described as the world's first paid football manager. Frank William Ramsay
Major-General Frank William Ramsay (10 December 1875 – 1 October 1954) was a senior British Army officer in the First World War. Military career Ramsay transferred from the militia into the Middlesex Regiment on 15 May 1897. He served with the Mounted infantry before the First World War. In the war, he served as commander of 48th Brigade and participated in the Battle of Messines in 1917. He went on to be General Officer Commanding 58th (2/1st London) Division in June 1918. In 1925 he took command over a Brigade of the Quetta Division until he retired in 1929. Later he lived in Holbrook Hall, Sudbury. Francis Ramsay (cricketer)
Marmaduke Francis Ramsay (8 December 1860 – 31 December 1947) was an English first-class cricketer and a pastoralist in Queensland. The son of Robert Ramsay, he was born at Cheltenham in December 1860. His father had pastoral interests in Queensland, with Ramsay travelling with his family to Australia. There he was educated at Ipswich Grammar School. Upon the families return to England in 1874, he attended Harrow School. From Harrow he went up to Trinity Hall, Cambridge. Despite being an avid cricketer, he never represented Cambridge University Cricket Club in first-class cricket, but did play minor matches for the club. Ramsay returned to Australia in 1880 to gain pastoral experience at Wellshot Station, before proceeding to takeover the management of Eton Vale. Admiral Francis Munroe Ramsay (April 5, 1835 – July 19, 1914) was an officer in the United States Navy who distinguished himself in the American Civil War, and who later served as Chief of the Navy's Bureau of Navigation. Early life and career Born in the District of Columbia, Ramsay was appointed midshipman on October 5, 1850. After training in and in , he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1856. He subsequently served in with the Brazil Squadron; in with the Pacific Squadron; on ordnance duty at the Washington Navy Yard; and in when working with the Royal Navy's Commander-in-Chief, Cape of Good Hope and West Africa. Francis Dennis Ramsay (15 March 1925 – 8 February 2009), known as Dennis Ramsay, was a Scottish portrait painter, trained in London and Paris, who worked mainly in Australia in the classical tradition. Background and training A painter in the classical tradition, Ramsay was born in London of Scottish descent. He was related to the Scottish artists Allan Ramsay (1713–1784) and James Ramsay (1759–1854). Towards the end of World War II, he served in the RAF, and in 1952 he made a model of the State Coach which was, exceptionally, accepted by HM Queen Elizabeth II. This model coach was built as part of an exhibition undertaken in collaboration with Clothilde Highton GMC (Guild of Memorial Craftsmen), an Australian painter and sculptor living in Arundel, Sussex between 1946 and 1952, whose husband, an officer of the Royal Navy, had been killed in WWII. Ernest Pringle Ramsay (c. August 1870 – 30 July 1952) was Deputy Director of Posts and Telegraphs (or Deputy Postmaster-General) for Western Australia 1925–1927 and for South Australia, 1927–1935. History Ramsay was born in Maitland, New South Wales to postman Charles Ramsay (died 1872) and Rosanna Ramsay (died 1893), both Scots-born, and Ramsay was unmistakably proud of his Scottish ancestry. He was educated at Maitland High School for Boys, having won a scholarship which entitled him to three years' free tuition, then started his 56-year career in 1884 as a telegram messenger-boy at Maitland post-office. Eileen Ramsay (5 December 1915 – 8 February 2017) was a British photographer who made work about yachting and powerboats. Early life Ramsay was born in Sanderstead, Surrey, and grew up in Amersham, Buckinghamshire, where she attended the nearby Chesham Grammar School. After leaving school, she went to Scandinavia to be a nanny for some friends of the family, where she first encountered sailing. In 1937 Ramsay returned to the UK, where she got a job with the London society photographer Marcus Adams. Adams, realising that with the outbreak of World War II, he would probably be called up to act as a war photographer, handed his staff cameras and challenged them to go and take photos. Ramsay's photographs were chosen as the best ones, and she was given the responsibility of running Adams's studio during the war. At the time, Ramsay admitted to having little knowledge about cameras, but found that she was successful at taking portraits, and learnt her craft while doing her job. ... Edward Pierson Ramsay FRSEFLS LLD (3 December 1842 – 16 December 1916) was an Australian zoologist who specialised in ornithology. Early life Ramsay was born in Dobroyd Estate, Long Cove, Sydney, and educated at St Mark's Collegiate School, The King's School, Sydney, The King's School, Parramatta. He studied medicine from 1863 to 1865 at the University of Sydney but did not graduate. Career Although he never had had any formal scientific training in zoology, Ramsay had a keen interest in natural history and published many papers. Edward Bannerman Ramsay, (17 January 1793– 27 December 1872), usually referred to as Dean Ramsay, was a clergyman of the Scottish Episcopal Church, and Dean of Edinburgh in that communion from 1841, has a place in literature through his ''Reminiscences of Scottish Life and Character'', which had gone through 22 editions at his death. It is a book full of the personality of the author, and preserves many traits and anecdotes. Ebba Ramsay (1 October 1828 – 29 October 1922) was a Swedish social worker, writer, and translator. She was among the first Sunday school teachers in Sweden and created the first institution in the country devoted to the care of mentally and physically challenged children.
