Ramco Point Conservation Park
__NOTOC__ Ramco Point Conservation Park is a protected area located in the Australian state of South Australia in the locality of Sunlands about north-east of the state capital of Adelaide and about north-west of the municipal seat of Waikerie. The conservation park consists of crown land described as “Allotment 4 of DP 66666” in the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Waikerie. It came into existence on 22 June 2006 by proclamation under the ''National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972''. It is located at the east end of Sunlands between Ramco Road in the west and the bank of the River Murray in the east. As of 2016, it covered an area of . The name which was approved on 20 October 2005 is derived from a geographical feature called ''Ramco Point'' which is located close to the conservation park. Ramco is a town in the Riverland region of South Australia north-east of the state capital, Adelaide and west of Waikerie. At the , Ramco had a population of 166. It is on the south (left) bank of the Murray River downstream from Waikerie. Ramco has a post office, a Lutheran church, a town hall and a school, Ramco Primary School. The current town was surveyed in 1940 however there was an earlier village settlement by the same name in the same area, settled in 1894. The name Ramco is derived from an Aboriginal word "Bogorampko", a mythical tribe supposed to be superior to all natives. The locality includes the Ramco Lagoon adjacent to the river, but the adjoining Ramco Point Conservation Park is in the adjacent locality of Sunlands. Norman Tindale
Norman Barnett Tindale AO (12 October 1900 – 19 November 1993) was an Australian anthropologist, archaeologist, entomologist and ethnologist. Life Tindale was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1900. His family moved to Tokyo and lived there from 1907 to 1915, where his father worked as an accountant at the Salvation Army mission in Japan. Norman attended the American School in Japan, where his closest friend was Gordon Bowles, a Quaker who, like him, later became an anthropologist. The family returned to Perth in August 1917, and soon after moved to Adelaide where Tindale took up a position as a library cadet at the Adelaide Public Library, together with another cadet, the future physicist, Mark Oliphant. The Riverland Mallee Important Bird Area comprises a tract of mallee habitat and riverine woodland extending from near Waikerie in the Riverland region in eastern South Australia north-eastwards into south-western New South Wales. Description The extent of the Important Bird Area (IBA) in South Australia includes the Riverland Biosphere Reserve, pastoral leases, privately held conservation reserves such the Gluepot Reserve and protected areas declared by statute. In New South Wales it includes Scotia Sanctuary as well as several areas of uncleared native vegetation. Wetlands within the extent of the IBA are Lake Merreti, Hart Lagoon and Stockyard Plains.
