Raketaka
Raketaka (August 1824 – 1866) was heir to the throne of Madagascar until her father Radama I died. She was also the mother of the last queen, Ranavalona III. Biography Early life Raketaka was born in Antananarivo in August 1824. She was the youngest child of King Radama I and Queen Rasalimo. Rasalimo was the daughter of King Ramitraho of Menabe. She was born in August 1824 and had two sisters, Ratsiadala and Ramarivelo. Prior to her birth, Radama I had intended for his nephew Rakotobe to inherit the crown, however on her birth it was decided they would marry and she would become Queen. After the death of Radama I in 1828, there was turmoil as to who should become sovereign. Some parties supported Raketaka's claim to the throne. However, power was assumed by her step-mother, the king's first wife, Ranavalona I. Ranavalona III
Ranavalona III (; 22 November 1861 – 23 May 1917) was the last sovereign of the Kingdom of Madagascar. She ruled from 30 July 1883 to 28 February 1897 in a reign marked by ultimately futile efforts to resist the colonial designs of the government of France. As a young woman, she was selected from among several Andriana qualified to succeed Queen Ranavalona II upon her death. Like both preceding queens, Ranavalona entered a political marriage with a member of the Hova elite named Rainilaiarivony, who largely oversaw the day-to-day governance of the kingdom and managed its foreign affairs in his role as prime minister. Ranavalona tried to stave off colonization by strengthening trade and diplomatic relations with foreign powers throughout her reign, but French attacks on coastal port towns and an assault on the capital city of Antananarivo led to the capture of the royal palace in 1895, ending the sovereignty and political autonomy of the centuries-old kingdom. Rasendranoro
Rasendranoro was a Malagasy princess and older sister of Ranavalona III. Biography Princess Rasendranoro was the daughter of Princess Raketaka of Madagascar and Andriantsimianatra. She was an older sister of Ranavalona III. She moved into an apartment in the royal palace after her sister was crowned queen. In 1881 Rasendranoro married a nobleman named Andrianaly. She had three children. In 1897, after the monarchy was abolished and French colonial rule was enforced, Rasendranoro, along with her daughter and her aunt, Princess Ramasindrazana, joined the queen in Toamasina. They took a ship to Réunion, where they lived in exile. The party arrived in Pointe des Galets and were taken to Saint-Denis. They took up residence in the Hotel de l'Europe. Merina Kingdom
The Merina Kingdom, or Kingdom of Madagascar, officially the Kingdom of Imerina (–1897), was a pre-colonial state off the coast of Southeast Africa that, by the 19th century, dominated most of what is now Madagascar. It spread outward from Imerina, the Central Highlands region primarily inhabited by the Merina ethnic group with a spiritual capital at Ambohimanga and a political capital west at Antananarivo, currently the seat of government for the modern state of Madagascar. Sakalava People
The Sakalava are an ethnic group of Madagascar. They are found on the western and northwest region of the island, in a band along the coast. The Sakalava are one of the smaller ethnic groups, constituting about 6.2 percent of the total population, that is over 1,210,000 in 2014. Their name means "people of the long valleys." They occupy the western edge of the island from Toliara in the south to the Sambirano River in the north. Ethnic identity The Sakalava denominate a number of smaller ethnic groups that once comprised an empire, rather than an ethnic group in its own right.
