Raissa Martin
Raissa Martin (born 3 March 1991) is an Australian goalball player who represented Australia at the 2016 Rio Paralympics and the 2020 Summer Paralympics. Personal life Martin was born on 3 March 1991 in Hervey Bay, Queensland. She has been legally blind since birth with rod monochromatism. She grew up in Hervey Bay but moved to Brisbane to attend Queensland Institute of Technology where she completed a Bachelor of Business. In 2015, she undertook a Graduate Diploma of Education at the University of Queensland. in 2021, Raissa works as Middle School Officer - Vision Impairment, Ambrose Treacy College. Goalball Martin made her debut for Australia at the 2014 Japan Goalball Championships as part of the development squad. She is classified as a B3 competitor. B3 (classification)
B3 is a medical based Paralympic classification for blind sport. Competitors in this classification have partial sight, with visual acuity from 2/60 to 6/60. It is used by a number of blind sports including para-alpine skiing, para-Nordic skiing, blind cricket, blind golf, five-a-side football, goalball and judo. Some other sports, including adaptive rowing, athletics and swimming, have equivalents to this class. The B3 classification was first created by the IBSA in the 1970s, and has largely remained unchanged since despite an effort by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) to move towards a more functional and evidence-based classification system. Classification is often handled on the international level by the International Blind Sports Association (IBSA) although it is also handled by national sport federations. Meica Horsburgh
Meica Jayne Horsburgh (née Christensen; born 24 February 1989) is an Australian goalball player. She began playing the sport in 2004, the same year she made her national team debut. After the national team took a three-year break, she was named the captain in 2010 and played in the Goalball World Championships. She represented Australia at the 2012 Summer Paralympics and was at the 2016 Summer Paralympics and 2020 Summer Paralympics. Personal Horsburgh was born in Wynnum North, Queensland, on 24 February 1989. She has a visual disability, with partial sight. She attended Cavendish Road State High School, and played in a goalball demonstration game there in 2004. Other sports she participates in include skiing. Goalball Players At The 2016 Summer Paralympics
Goalball is a team sport designed specifically for athletes with a vision impairment. Participants compete in teams of three, and try to throw a ball that has bells embedded inside of it into the opponents' goal. The ball is thrown by hand and never kicked. Using ear-hand coordination, originating as a rehabilitation exercise, the sport has no able-bodied equivalent. Able-bodied athletes are also blindfolded when playing this sport. Played indoors, usually on a volleyball court, games consist of twelve-minute halves (formerly ten-minute halves) with three-minute half-time. Where there is a tie, golden goal overtime occurs in the form of two three-minute periods (and a second three-minute half-time). If the tie persists, a paired shootout ('extra throws' and 'sudden death extra throws') determines the winner. Australia Women's National Goalball Team
Goalball is a team sport designed specifically for athletes with a visual impairment, vision impairment. Australia commenced its involvement in the sport in 1980. Its women's team has completed in trans-Tasman competitions, the International Blind Sports Federation, IBSA World Goalball Championships, and the :Goalball at the Summer Paralympics, Paralympic Games. About 2015, the women's squad adopted the name 'Aussie Belles', whilst the Australia men's national goalball team, men's squad became 'Aussie Storm'. Tyan "Little Girl" Taylor (born 23 March 1990) is an Australian goalball winger and is classified as a B3 competitor. In 2009, after only a month playing the sport, Taylor was named to the New South Wales team. She made the national team in 2011 and has played in the 2010 World Championships, 2011 IBSA Goalball World Cup and 2011 IBSA Africa Oceania Goalball Regional Champions. Brodie Smith (born 8 August 1998) is an Australian goalball athlete and is classified as a B3 competitor. She represented Australia at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. Personal life Smith was born on 8 August 1998. She has retinitis pigmentosa, a genetic condition that causes a loss of peripheral vision. She attended Maitland's Christian School. Amy Ridley (born 10 July 2002) is an Australian goalball athlete. She represented Australia at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. Personal life Ridley was born on 10 July 2002. At the age of six she was diagnosed with panuveitis, an autoimmune disease. She attended Turramurra High School. In 2021, she is a full-time student, studying law and business, and working casually as an academic tutor. Her father is Andrew Ridley. Having only started playing the sport in 2009, she has several goalball scholarships. She plays for the New South Wales women's goalball team in the Australian national championships, where she has won three silver medals.
