Raisio
Raisio (; sv, Reso) is a List of cities and towns in Finland, town and Municipalities of Finland, municipality in south-western Finland and an important junction of major roads. The town has a population of () and is located in the region of Southwest Finland, neighbouring the region's capital, Turku. The town's land area is , and has about of coastline to the Bay of Raisio on its southern tip. History The oldest known written records relating to Raisio are from the year 1292, and there is strong evidence of Stone Age settlement in the area, but Raisio did not become a city until 1974. SM Ringette
SM Ringette, previously "", is the elite semi-professional ringette league in Finland's first division and its highest. The league features the best ringette players in Finland and is run by Ringette Finland. The league was known as until it was rebranded in 2021 and is known as the "Finnish National Ringette League" by English speakers. The National Ringette League (NRL) is its Canadian equivalent. The league has been in operation since the 1987–88 winter season and a number of its clubs competed in the Ringette World Club Championship when the international club tournament existed. Several of the league's players have played for the Finland national ringette team at the World Ringette Championships including Marjukka Virta, Anne Pohjola, and Susanna Tapani. Ringette is a contact sport, non-contact winter team sport played on ice hockey rinks using Ice skates#Ice hockey skates, ice hockey skates, straight sticks with drag-tips, and a #Equipment, blue, rubber, pneumatic ring designed for use on ice surfaces. The sport is among a small number of organized team sports created exclusively for female competitors. Though ice hockey rinks are used, #Ringette rink, ringette rinks use markings specific to ringette and the sport uses strategic play which more closely resembles basketball than ice hockey. Ringette World Club Championship
The Ringette World Club Championship (RWCC) was an international ringette competition organized by the International Ringette Federation (IRF). It featured the top teams from Canada's National Ringette League (NRL), Finland's , and Sweden's Ringette Dam-SM. The World Club Championship was only held twice, the first time in 2008 and the last time in 2011. In 2013 the IRF cancelled the 2014 Championship which was planned to be organized in Sweden. After the original two international tournaments, the club competition was discontinued due to financial difficulties preventing teams from participating. Markus Nurmi (born 29 June 1998) is a Finnish professional ice hockey forward currently playing with HC TPS in the Liiga. He was selected by the Ottawa Senators in the sixth round, 163rd overall, in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Playing career Nurmi played as a youth within HC TPS organization and made his Finnish Liiga debut with TPS during the 2015–16 season. Lapinlahden Luistin -89 (abbr. LL-89) in Lapinlahden, from the municipality Pohjois-Savosta, is a home club specializing in ice sports, whose sports include ice hockey, rinkball and ringette. The club's home arena is the Lapinlahti Ice Hall (Lapinlahden jäähalli). The club also has several junior teams in ice hockey and ringette. Anne Pohjola (born April 18, 1985, in Kuopio, Lapinlahti), is an elite Finnish ringette player who plays forward and is a prolific scorer. She has been a member of the Finland national ringette team several times and currently plays in Finland's semi-professional ringette league, SM Ringette (formerly ). The league is known as the Finnish national ringette league to English speakers. In SM Ringette, she has played for various clubs, mainly , and has served as captain of that club. Marjukka Virta
Marjukka Virta (born 1983 in Karinainen, Finland) is a retired elite Finnish ringette player who played forward in semi-professional ringette in Finland and for the Finland national ringette team, but now coaches the sport. Virta (now retired as a player) has won six World Ringette Championships gold and one silver as a player for Team Finland Senior. For six of those national team world victories, Virta was the captain. As a semi-professional player, Virta played in Finland's SM Ringette league, Finland's premiere ringette league, formerly known as Ringeten SM-sarja. The Finnish ringette association, Ringette Finland, froze Virta's jersey number 4 on November 1, 2022, in Turku and is the first Finnish ringette player in history to receive this honour.
