Rainbow Lake Wilderness
The Rainbow Lake Wilderness is a wilderness area located within the Chequamegon unit of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The land is in northern Wisconsin and entirely in Bayfield County. The wilderness area is operated by the United States Forest Service. Rainbow Lake Wilderness includes Rainbow Lake, fifteen other lakes and nine small ponds. Many can be accessed by former logging trails and rail grades, including the North Country National Scenic Trail. Rainbow Lake Wilderness is entirely bordered by roads that are maintained by the Forest Service. It is heavily wooded with many species of trees including northern hardwoods, balsam fir, pine, and paper birch. Rainbow Lake Wilderness gives opportunity for visitors to fish, hike, and camp in some of what is considered old-growth forest. Bayfield County, Wisconsin
Bayfield County is the northernmost county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2020 census, its population is 16,220. Its county seat is Washburn. The county was created in 1845 and organized in 1850. The Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa has a reservation in Bayfield County and is the county's largest employer. Drummond is a town in Bayfield County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 169 at the 2020 census, down from 463 at the 2010 census. The census-designated place of Drummond is located in the town. The unincorporated community of Lake Owen is also located in the town. Transportation U.S. Highway 63 serves as a main route in the community. North Country National Scenic Trail
The North Country National Scenic Trail, generally known as the North Country Trail or simply the NCT, is a footpath stretching over from Middlebury in central Vermont to Lake Sakakawea State Park in central North Dakota in the United States; connecting both the Long Trail and the Appalachian Trail with the Lewis and Clark Trail. The Wilderness Act of 1964 () was written by Howard Zahniser of The Wilderness Society. It created the legal definition of wilderness in the United States, and protected 9.1 million acres (37,000 km²) of federal land. The result of a long effort to protect federal wilderness and to create a formal mechanism for designating wilderness, the Wilderness Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on September 3, 1964 after over sixty drafts and eight years of work.
