The Railways Agency of Turkmenistan ( tk, "Türkmendemirýollary" agentligi, previously the Ministry of Railways ( tk, Türkmenistanyň demir ýol ulaglary ministrligi), is a government agency in Turkmenistan responsible for oversight of the state rail corporation "Demirýollary" AGPJ. History Russian Empire In September 1880, the first section of the railway was built from the eastern coast of the Caspian Sea to Mollagara. In October 1881, rails were laid to the village of Kyzyl-Arvat (today's Serdar). Construction of the second section of the railway continued in 1885 and 1886 to large settlements of Turkmenistan: Geok Tepe, Ashgabat, Tejen, Mary, Turkmenistan, Mary, and Chardzhou (today's Türkmenabat, ending at the Amu Darya. At the end of 1887, a wooden bridge with a length of more than 2 km was built across the Amu Darya, which allowed construction of the third section of the railroad to begin. The Trans-Caspian Railway (also called the Central Asian Railway, russian: Среднеазиатская железная дорога) is a railway that follows the path of the Silk Road through much of western Central Asia. It was built by the Russian Empire during its expansion into Central Asia in the 19th century. The railway was started in 1879, following the Russian victory over Khokand. Türkmenbaşy Gulf
The Türkmenbaşy Gulf or Türkmenbaşy Aýlagy or Türkmenbaşy Bay ( tk, Türkmenbaşy aýlagy, russian: залив Туркменбашы) is a bay of the Caspian Sea in the coast of Turkmenistan. With the Krasnovodsk Peninsula, Türkmenbaşy Peninsula to the north and the Cheleken Peninsula to the south, the gulf extends westwards into the sea for 46 km and has an 18 km wide mouth. At its northwest corner are the Bala-Ishem salt marshes which mark the mouth of the dried-up Uzboy River. It became part of the Hazar Nature Reserve in 1968 and was designated as a Ramsar site in 2008.
