Railway Accidents In Victoria
There have been a number of train accidents on the railway network of Victoria, Australia. Some of these are listed below. Fatal accidents North Geelong, 1857 On 25 June 1857, the inaugural train of the Geelong and Melbourne Railway Company left Geelong at 10 a.m., bound for the company's temporary Melbourne terminus at Greenwich (now Newport). When the train passed under the road overpass adjacent to the Ocean Child Hotel in North Geelong, Henry Walter, the locomotive superintendent of the company, was knocked off the locomotive and fatally injured. Jolimont, 1881 On 30 August 1881, the first accident in Victoria involving passenger deaths and multiple injuries occurred. Four passengers were killed, and 39 were injured, when a tyre broke on one of the wheels of the 8:54am express from Brighton to Flinders Street Station, causing the derailment of five carriages near Jolimont. Rail Transport In Victoria
Rail transport in the Australian state of Victoria is provided by a number of railway operators who operate over the government-owned railway lines. The network consists of 2,357 km of Victorian broad gauge () lines, and 1,912 km of standard gauge () freight and interstate lines; the latter increasing with gauge conversion of the former. Historically, a few experimental gauge lines were built, along with various private logging, mining and industrial railways. The rail network radiates from the state capital, Melbourne, with main interstate links to Sydney and to Adelaide, as well as major lines running to regional centres, upgraded as part of the Regional Fast Rail project. A fishplate joins two lengths of track A fishplate, splice bar or joint bar is a metal connecting plate used to bolt the ends of two rails into a continuous track. The name is derived from ''fish'', a wooden reinforcement of a "built-up" ship's mast that helped round out its desired profile. The top and bottom faces taper inwards along their short dimensions to create an even alignment between the two rails when the fish plate is wedged into place by tightening its bolts during installation. In rail transport modelling, a fishplate is often a small copper or nickel silver plate that slips onto both rails to provide the functions of maintaining alignment and electrical continuity. Mangalore Railway Station
Mangalore is a closed station located in the township of Mangalore, at the junction of the North East and Goulburn Valley railway lines in Victoria, Australia. The station was one of 35 closed to passenger traffic on 4 October 1981 as part of the ''New Deal'' timetable for country passengers. The former station building was moved from the site, and currently sits in a yard on the way into nearby Avenel. The station was located on a triangular wedge between the two lines, and was once the end of the double track from Melbourne. Albury Railway Station
Albury railway station is a heritage-listed railway station at Railway Place, Albury, New South Wales, Australia, adjacent to the border with Victoria, in Australia. It was designed under the direction of John Whitton and built from 1880 to 1881. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register in 1999. Leyland Railmotor
The Leyland railmotor (also known at the ''double-ended railmotor'') was introduced by the Victorian Railways in 1925. After the success of the AEC railmotor, the Victorian Railways wanted a more powerful and comfortable vehicle, for longer journeys. Two similar railmotors were constructed for the Tasmanian Government Railways in 1925. History Four of the railmotors were built by the Victorian Railways for use in Victoria, mostly on the services to Echuca, Cohuna, Whittlesea and Tallangatta, with the occasional trip to Mansfield and Maffra. Royal Melbourne Show
The Melbourne Royal Show is an agricultural show held at Melbourne Showgrounds every September. It is organised by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria and has been running since 1848. Each year Melbourne Royal Show attracts attendances of up to half a million people. About The traditional purpose is the display of rural industry, including livestock and produce with its associated competitions and awards however the show also features funfair, amusement rides and a sideshow alley, as well as the Australian tradition of 'Showbags', carry bags containing samples of products produced by various commercial enterprises.
