Railway Museum Of Eastern Ontario
The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario, a rail museum in a former CNoR station, stands on the abandoned right-of-way of a Canadian Northern Railway line which once led southwest toward Napanee. Established 1985 as the Smiths Falls Railway Museum, the RMEO works to preserve the 1913 Canadian Northern (CNoR) station and a collection of historic rolling stock, equipment and railway memorabilia. History The Canadian Northern Railway (CNoR, 1899–1923) struggled to build a third transcontinental railway from Québec City to Vancouver but ultimately met with financial ruin. Its assets were acquired by Canadian National Railway, which gradually abandoned much of the network as unprofitable or duplicative of its existing lines. Smiths Falls is a town in Eastern Ontario, Canada, southwest of Ottawa. As of the Canada 2021 Census, 2021 census it has a population of 9,254. It is in the Census division for Lanark County, but is separated from the county. Cataraqui Trail
The Cataraqui Trail is a 104-km Rails-to-Trails multi-use linear recreational trail in Eastern Ontario, Canada. The route passes by farmland, woods, lakes, and wetlands. The trail begins southwest of Smiths Falls, at a parking lot south of Ontario Highway 15 designated as kilometre zero (). Numbered posts are situated every one to five kilometres. In its midsection the trail crosses the UNESCO Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve. The segment running from Smiths Falls to Harrowsmith is part of the Trans Canada Trail. The Rideau Canal is crossed on a 1912 railway trestle at Chaffey's Locks, near kilometre post 42. The K&P Rail Trail intersects the Cataraqui Trail at Harrowsmith. Greater Napanee
Greater Napanee is a town in southeastern Ontario, Canada, approximately west of Kingston and the county seat of Lennox and Addington County. It is located on the eastern end of the Bay of Quinte. Greater Napanee municipality was created by amalgamating the old Town of Napanee with the townships of Adolphustown, North and South Fredericksburgh, and Richmond in 1999. The Kingston and Pembroke Railway (K&P) was a Canadian railway that operated in eastern Ontario. The railway was seen as a business opportunity which would support the lumber and mining industries, as well as the agricultural economy in eastern Ontario. The K&P is affectionately remembered as the ''Kick and Push'' railroad. History Incorporated in 1871, the K&P was intended to run from Kingston to Pembroke. By 1884, approximately 180 kilometres of mainline and sidings had been laid, reaching Renfrew. By this time the Canada Central Railway had already built a line from Renfrew to Pembroke, and it no longer made financial sense to continue. Thus the K&P was terminated at Renfrew. Due to decreasing timber and mineral resources in the late 19th century, the company developed financial difficulties. Rideau Canal
The Rideau Canal, also known unofficially as the Rideau Waterway, connects Canada's capital city of Ottawa, Ontario, to Lake Ontario and the Saint Lawrence River at Kingston.
