Ragnvald Hjerlow
Ragnvald Amandus Pedersen Hjerlow (surname also spelled Hjerløw; February 20, 1863 – March 13, 1947) was a Norwegian painter and a teacher at the Norwegian National Academy of Craft and Art Industry. Hjerlow was born in Christiania (now Oslo). He received early training under Jacob Calmeyer, graduated from the National Academy of Craft and Art Industry in 1880, and then became a student of Knud Bergslien. He studied in Munich in 1882 and in Paris and Brittany from 1889 at 1891. He received the A. C. Houen Grant in 1890 and 1891. In 1883 he attended Frits Thaulow's "open-air academy" at Modum, and he debuted at the Autumn Exhibition in 1883. Hjerlow attended the 1889 World Exhibition in Paris, where he received honorable mention. Hjerlow was a teacher at Christiania Burgher School from 1895 and a senior teacher at the National Academy of Craft and Art Industry from 1908 to 1933. Jacob Calmeyer
Jacob Mathias Calmeyer (30 October 1802 – 3 August 1883) was a Norwegian painter. Biography He was born in Fredrikshald in Østfold, Norway. He was admitted in 1819 as part of the first class of students at the newly established Norwegian Royal Drawing School in Christiania. Among his teachers were Jacob Munch and Johannes Flintoe. Between 1821 and 1826 he was a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen where he trained under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg. He was admitted to the artist guild in Bergen during 1832. In 1835 he settled in Stockholm, where he remained until at least 1839. In 1859, Calmeyer returned to Norway and settled in Christiania. His students included the painter Ragnvald Hjerlow (c. 1877). He is represented in the National Gallery, Bergen Art Museum, National Museum and the Royal Library in Stockholm. Knud Bergslien
Knud Larsen Bergslien (15 May 1827 – 27 November 1908) was a Norwegian painter, art teacher and master artist. In his art, he frequently portrayed the lives of the Norwegian people, their history and heroes of the past. Bergslien is most associated with his historical paintings, especially ''Skiing Birchlegs Crossing the Mountain with the Royal Child''. Background Knud Larsen Bergslien was born in Voss, in Hordaland, Norway. His parents were Lars Bergeson Bergslien and Kirsten Knutsdotter Gjelle. Knud Bergslien was the brother of sculptor Brynjulf Bergslien and uncle of painter and sculptor Nils Bergslien. Monuments honoring the three famous Bergslien artists now exist in Bergslien park located in Voss, Hordaland. Christiania Burgher School (''Christiania Borger- og Realskole'' or ''Christiania Borgerskole'', commonly known as ''Borgerskolen'') was a private middle school in Oslo, Christiania (now Oslo), Norway.
