Raffaele Postiglione
Raffaele Postiglione ( Naples, 1818, November 28 - Naples, 1897, February 23rd) was an Italian painter. Biography Born to poor parents Raffaele trained in the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples, where he worked under Costanzo Angelini. By 1851, he was working under and with Giuseppe Mancinelli. He also labored alongside Giovanni Salomone. In the 1860s, he was a professor in the Neapolitan Academy along with Federico Maldarelli, Gabriele Morelli, and Antonio Licata. He painted historical and religious canvases. The Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli (Naples Academy of Fine Arts) is a university-level art school in Naples. In the past it has been known as the Reale Istituto di Belle Arti and the Reale Accademia di Belle Arti. Founded by King Charles VII of Naples in 1752, it is one of the oldest art schools in Italy, and offers various levels of study up to and including the equivalent of an Italian laurea (the country's main post-secondary academic degree). Costanzo Angelini
Costanzo Angelini (22 October 1760, Santa Giusta, Rieti - 22 June 1853, Naples) was an Italian painter, engraver, and restorer of the Neoclassical style. Biography While in Rome, he became of follower or Giovanni Volpato and Raffaello Morghen. When he moved to Naples in 1790, he became popular for his Neoclassic paintings, and is known for having engraved the Greek Vases of the Hamilton collection (1795). He was patronized as a portrait painter by the aristocracy and court. In 1813 he became superintendent and restorer for the Museo Borbonico. Later, he became a professor of design with the Real Accademia delle Belle Arti of Naples and, in 1841, he was named their secretary. Filippo Balbi, Michele de Napoli and Giuseppe Marsigli were among his pupils. Giuseppe Mancinelli
Giuseppe Mancinelli (17 March 1813, in Naples – 25 May 1875, in Castrocielo) was an Italian painter. Biography His father was in the service of the Venitgnano family, who patronized his early studies at the Neapolitan Academy of Fine Arts, then under the guidance of Vincenzo Camuccini. He painted an altarpiece of ''San Carlo Borromeo provides Viaticum to Plague Victim'' for the Church of San Carlo all'Arena. After 1850, he was named to replace Tito Angelini as the professor of Design at the Neapolitan Academy, besting out Di Napoli and Raffaele Postiglione in a contest for the position. Federico Maldarelli
Federico or Federigo Maldarelli (October 2, 1826 – December 9, 1893) was an Italian painter born in Naples. Biography His father was a painter, but Maldarelli's first formal training was under Costanzo Angelini. He first exhibited at the 1839 Mostre Borboniche, a painting of ''Head of the Holy Virgin''. He participated in this exhibition regularly until 1859. In 1855, he was awarded the third-class gold medal for his ''San Gliceria converte e battezza il suo carceriere'' (in the Capodimonte Museum). The painting hung next to the famed ''Gl'iconoclasti'' of Domenico Morelli. Both painters became lifelong friends. Antonio Licata
Antonio Licata (January 3, 1810 - June 27, 1892) was an Italian painter, mainly of sacred subjects and portraits. Biography Licata was born in Agrigento, Sicily. At the age of 16 years, he moved to Naples, where he planned to enroll in the military; however he chose to become a painter. His portrait of his parents convinced them to sponsor his education at the Neapolitan Academy of Fine Arts. He subsequently obtained a stipend to study at the Accademia di San Luca in Rome. During a trip to Venice, he met the painter Orsola Faccioli, who became his wife, and moved with him south to live in and around Naples. The Pinacoteca di Capodimonte held two of his works: ''San Paolo che accusa il Mago Elima'', awarded a gold medal; and ''Galileo'' commissioned by the King Vittorio Emanuele.
