Radio broadcasting in Sri Lanka dates to 1923. Radio broadcasting, like other forms of media in Sri Lanka, is generally divided along linguistic lines with state and private media operators providing services in Sinhala, Tamil, and English language. History The first radio broadcast in Ceylon was in 1923 when recorded music was broadcast using parts of radio equipment from a captured German submarine. Regular broadcasting started in Colombo in July 1924. Ceylon's first radio station Radio Colombo started regular broadcasting on 16 December 1925. The station was taken over by the British military during World War II who renamed the station Radio SEAC which broadcast across South Asia from October 1944. After the war the station was handed back to the civilian government of Ceylon who renamed it Radio Ceylon on 1 October 1949. The station was immensely popular both in Ceylon and other parts of Asia. Online radio (also web radio, net radio, streaming radio, e-radio, IP radio, Internet radio) is a digital audio service transmitted via the Internet. Shree FM
Shree FM (ශ්රී FM), is a Shinhla-language radio station owned by EAP Broadcasting Company. The station commenced its operations in 1992 as FM99 under the company of Colombo Communication LTD (CCL) as the first privately owned radio station in Sri Lanka One of the key people of the company at that time was a veteran broadcaster named Livi Wijemanne. The ownership of CCL was transferred to VANIK INC. and then to E.A.P. Edirisingha (Pvt) Ltd. During the management of VANIK INC. they changed the channel's name to 'SAWANA RADIO' under the guidance of Jackson Antony. When E.A.P took over CCL they renamed as Shree FM in 1998. E.A.P. Kiss FM is a privately owned English language radio station in Sri Lanka. Founded in 2009 as Kiss 898, the station broadcasts Hip Hop, Pop and Dance music across the country. History Kiss 969 started test transmissions in July 2009. The station was officially launched on 13 August 2009. The Top 40 station broadcast a mix of Dance, Hip Hop and Pop to audiences in Colombo, Kandy and the Coastal regions. By 2012 the station had become one of the country's top five media brands. Lakhanda (Voice of Lanka) is a Sri Lankan radio station. It was started on 15 November 1996, under the ownership of Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation. Eventually the channel was amalgamated to ITN (Independent Television Network) on 1997 April 1 on a government cabinet decision.
