Radesca S.A. (also known as JUAN J. RADESCA S.A.) is an electronics manufacturing company in Uruguay, in the neighborhood of Peñarol, Montevideo, Peñarol in Montevideo. The company is the only producer of lead-acid batteries in the country. The factory was founded in 1935 and has been operated as a family business since. As of 2013, they employed 43 people and were protected by the national government as part of maintenance of national industries, especially for national automotive parts. They gained significant prominence during the Import substitution industrialization policy period during the 1960s. Their main manufacturing and smelting plant for lead in Montevideo is one of the main sources of lead contamination in the country. During the 1960s, the plant employed a number of processes for lead-acid battery recycling that exposed both employees and the local communities to large levels of industrial contamination. Peñarol, Montevideo
Peñarol, also known as Peñarol–Lavalleja, is a working-class ''barrio'' (neighbourhood or district) of Montevideo, Uruguay. On 10 March 1913, Peñarol was declared a "pueblo" (village) by the Act of Ley Nº 4.311. On 1 July 1953, its status was elevated to "villa" (town) by the Act of Ley Nº 11.967. Ever since, it has been integrated to Montevideo. Toponymic When Montevideo was a colonial walled city and the area of Peñarol had no name and was all farms field, Giovanni Battista Crosa an oriundo from Pinerolo ( Piedmont, Italy), set up a grocery store in 1776, where today is the intersection of Coronel Raíz and Route 102 (perimeter), in the currently piped nascent Miguelete stream. Crosa nicknamed the district with the name of his hometown, which is pronounced Pinareul in Piedmontese (or Pignerol in French) and was corrupted in popular speech as Peñarol.
