Rachel Leah Jones
Rachel Leah Jones (born 1970) is an American-Israeli documentary film director and producer. Her documentary film '' Advocate'' about the controversial human rights lawyer Leah Tsemel, which she co-directed and co-produced with cinematographer Philippe Bellaïche, premiered at 2019 Sundance Film Festival, and won top prizes at Kraków Film Festival, Thessaloniki Documentary Festival and Docaviv Festival. Early life and education Jones was born in Berkeley, California and raised in Tel Aviv. She has a BA in Race, Class, & Gender Studies and the Politics of Representation from Evergreen College in Olympia, Washington, and an MFA in Media Arts Production from the City University of New York. Ein Hawd
Ein Hawd ( ar, عين حوض; he, עין חוד) is an Arab village in northern Israel. Located on the foot of Mount Carmel, near Haifa, it falls under the jurisdiction of Hof HaCarmel Regional Council. In it had a population of . History The village was established following the 1948 Arab–Israeli War when 35 members of the Abu al-Hija family from the depopulated village of Ayn Hawd (now Ein Hod) returned to the village lands after being released from an Israeli prisoner of war camp, refused to leave the area and settled on the village lands. They established a new village. Initially the Israeli approved name given to the village by locals was Kfar Abu al-Hija. In 1978 the villagers were able to reclaim the name Ein Hawd. Attempts to dislodge them did not succeed, and they were eventually granted Israeli citizenship. ''500 Dunam on the Moon'' is a 2002 documentary film directed by Rachel Leah Jones about Ein Hod, a Palestinian village that was captured and depopulated by Israeli forces as part of the 1948 Palestinian expulsion and flight in the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. Synopsis The 700 year-old Palestinian village of Ayn Hawd was captured by Israeli forces in the 1948 war. The village was depopulated, most of its residents sent to refugee camps in Jordan and the West Bank. In 1953, Marcel Janco, a Romanian painter and a founder of the Dada movement, decided to "preserve" the village, transforming it into a Jewish artists' colony, turning the mosque into a cafe/bar, and renaming it Ein Hod. Simone Bitton (born 1955) is a French-Moroccan documentary filmmaker. Her films have been nominated for or won the César Award, the Marseille Festival of Documentary Film Award, and the Sundance Film Festival, Special Jury Prize (for ''Mur''). Zadok "Duki” Dror ( he, דוקי (צדוק) דרור), (born 1963) is an independent Israeli filmmaker whose films explore issues of migration, identity and displacement. Biography Zadok (Duki) Dror was born in Tel Aviv. In the early 1950s, Dror's parents fled from their native Iraq for the newly established state of Israel. When Dror's father was 17 he was arrested on charges of political activism and served five years in prison as a political prisoner. Upon his release, he was not allowed to stay in Iraq. After moving to Israel, the family changed their Arabic name, Darwish (Arabic for "wandering") to Dror (Hebrew for "freedom"). Dror studied in the United States at UCLA and is a graduate of Columbia College Chicago. Ethiopian Jews in Israel are immigrants and descendants of the immigrants from the Beta Israel communities in Ethiopia who now reside in Israel. To a lesser, but notable, extent, the Ethiopian Jewish community in Israel is also composed of Falash Mura, a community of Beta Israel which had converted to Christianity over the course of the past two centuries, but were permitted to immigrate to Israel upon returning to Israelite religion - this time largely to Rabbinic Judaism. Mizrahi Jews constitute one of the largest Jewish ethnic divisions among Israeli Jews. Mizrahi Jews are descended from Jews in the Middle East and Central Asia, from Babylonian and Persian heritage, who had lived for many generations under Muslim rule during the Middle Ages. The vast majority of them left the Muslim-majority countries during the Arab–Israeli conflict, in what is known as the Jewish exodus from Arab and Muslim countries.
