Rachael Maza
Rachael Zoa Maza is an Indigenous Australian television and film actress and stage director. Early life and education Maza is of Dutch, Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal Australian heritage, the daughter of Bob Maza, also an actor. She is a graduate of the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Career Television and film Maza worked as a TV presenter on ABC Television's weekly show focusing on Indigenous Australians, ''Message Stick''. and SBS's '' ICAM''. She has numerous credits as an actor in television series, including ''Wentworth, Winners and Losers, Halifax f.p., Stingers, SeaChange'', ''Heartland'' (in which her father also had a role), ''A Country Practice'' and ''Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries''. Indigenous Australians or Australian First Nations are people with familial heritage from, and membership in, the ethnic groups that lived in Australia before British colonisation. Lou Bennett (musician)
Lou Bennett is an Indigenous Australian musician, actor and academic researching Aboriginal languages and their retrieval. Early life and education Bennett is a Yorta Yorta/Dja Dja Wurrung woman from Echuca, Victoria, Australia. In October 2015 Bennett completed a PhD on Aboriginal language retrieval and reclamation at RMIT University. Her thesis was entitled "Sovereign Language Repatriation". Career Bennett started her musical career with her uncle's band "The Shades", before later joining Richard Frankland's band " Djaambi", where she met Sally Dastey and Amy Saunders—Bennett, Dastey and Saunders later formed the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Award-winning band Tiddas. The Black Arm Band
Black Arm Band is an Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander music theatre organisation. History The organisation was founded in late 2005 by Steven Richardson and has produced seven large-scale productions since its debut performance at the Melbourne Festival of the Arts in 2006 in addition to ongoing educational and development work in remote Aboriginal communities. The organisation's name comes from a speech by former Australian prime minister John Howard, who referred to a " black armband view of history". Their first show, '' murundak'' (meaning "alive" in Woiwurrung), debuted at the 2006 Melbourne International Arts Festival and afterwards played around Australia and internationally in London. The Sapphires (play)
''The Sapphires'' is an Australian play written by Tony Briggs and directed by Wesley Enoch. It is set in 1968 (a year after the referendum, which symbolically expanded the rights of Aboriginal people) and it tells the story of The Sapphires, a singing group of four Yorta Yorta women who tour Vietnam during the war. It was inspired by the true story of Briggs's mother, Laurel Robinson, and aunt, Lois Peeler, who toured Vietnam as singers. The pair slept on the stage, as Robinson recalled: "It was so scary – one night a bomb went off, the bed fell down and the place shook." Though set at the time of increasing calls for Aboriginal rights, the play takes these issues seriously but in a way that does not detract from its fun and humour and adds to its entertainment value. Wesley Enoch
Wesley James Enoch (born 1969) is an Australian playwright and artistic director. He is especially known for ''The 7 Stages of Grieving'', co-written with Deborah Mailman. He was artistic director of the Queensland Theatre Company from mid-2010 until October 2015, and completed a five-year stint as director of the Sydney Festival in February 2021. Biography Wesley James Enoch was born on North Stradbroke Island/Minjerribah in 1969, the eldest son of Doug and Lyn Enoch. and grew up in Brisbane.
