Rabāb
The ''rebab'' ( ar, ربابة, ''rabāba'', variously spelled ''rebap'', ''rubob'', ''rebeb'', ''rababa'', ''rabeba'', ''robab'', ''rubab'', ''rebob'', etc) is the name of several related string instruments that independently spread via Islamic trading routes over much of North Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and parts of Europe. The instrument is typically bowed, but is sometimes plucked. It is one of the earliest known bowed instruments, named no later than the 8th century, and is the parent of many bowed and stringed instruments. Variants There are chiefly 3 main types: A long-necked bowed variety that often has a spike at the bottom to rest on the ground (see first image to the right); thus this is called a spike fiddle in certain areas. Some of the instruments developing from this have vestigial spikes. Rabab Ibrahim Abdulhadi (born 1955) is a Palestinian Americans, Palestinian-born American scholar, activist, educator, editor, and an academic director. She is an Associate professor, Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies, Race and Resistance Studies, and the founding Director of Arab and Muslim Ethnicities and Diasporas Studies (AMED) at San Francisco State University (SFSU). Rabab Fetieh
Dr. Rabab Mohammad Abdulqader Fetieh (Arabic: رباب محمد عبدالقادر مغيربى فتيح) is a Saudi academic, currently a Professor of Orthodontics at the Faculty of Dentistry in King Abdulaziz University (KAU). She was Vice-Dean of the same institution (1993–2003) and a member of the founding faculty. Dr. Fetieh was head of the Orthodontic division at KAU (1989–2004) and was the Assistant Dean for Research and Post-graduate Affairs. She received her BDS from Alexandria University in Egypt and her DMSc from Harvard University. She is a pioneer in her field, as she is Saudi Arabia's first female orthodontist.
