''Raamanam'' ( ml, രാമാനം, ''Night Sky'') is a 2009 Malayalam film directed and produced by M. P. Sukumaran Nair. Jagathy Sreekumar plays the lead character in this film. The film is a re-depiction of ''Smarakasilakal'' (''Memorial Stones''), a celebrated Malayalam novel by Punathil Kunhabdulla. Plot A progressive thinking man, Pookoya Thangal (Jagathy Sreekumar) does not believe in the caste system or creed. One day a woman named Neeli was ostracized from the Hindu society because she became pregnant before marriage. Pookoya Thangal gave her a place to stay in his servant's house. Thangal's wife, Aatta Beevi ( Margi Sati), was also pregnant. Neeli died during childbirth of a baby boy. Aatta Beevi gave birth to a baby girl. Neeli's son was named Kunhali and Thangal's daughter's name was Pookkunhi Beevi. Kunhali stayed in Thangal's house. Smarakasilakal
''Smarakasilaka'' is a Malayalam novel written by Punathil Kunjabdulla in 1977. The story of the novel is woven around a mosque and its surroundings. The key figure is Khan Bahadur Pookkoya Thangal of the rich Arakkal family whose character is a rare mixture of dignity, benevolence and insatiable lust. ''Smarakasilakal'' is widely regarded as the author's masterpiece. Punathil said in an interview that it is his only novel and everything else that he has written subsequently is a repetition of it with some changes. The novel won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1978 and Sahitya Akademi Award in 1980. As of February 2013, more than 65,000 copies of the novel have been sold. Sreekumar P. K. (born 5 January 1951), better known by his stage name Jagathy Sreekumar or simply Jagathy, is an Indian actor, director and playback singer, who has appeared in over 1500 Malayalam films in a career spanning almost four decades. Punathil Kunjabdulla (3 April 1940 – 27 October 2017) was an Indian writer from Kerala. A medical doctor by profession, Kunjabdulla was a practitioner of the avant-garde in Malayalam literature. Margi Sathi
Margi Sathi (official name P. S. Sathi Devi) (1965 - 2015) was an exponent of Nangiǎr Kūthu which is a form of performing art derived from Koodiyattam and which is traditionally performed by the female members of the Chakkyar community of Kerala. She was also an accomplished expert in enacting the female characters in Koodiyattam. She has performed extensively within India and abroad. Kerala State Film Award (Special Jury Award)
The Kerala State Film Awards are the film awards for a motion picture made in Kerala. The awards started in 1969 by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala and since 1998 the awards have been bestowed by Kerala State Chalachitra Academy on behalf of the Department of Cultural Affairs. The awardees are decided by an independent jury formed by the academy and the Department of Cultural Affairs, Govt. of Kerala. The jury usually consists of eminent personalities from the film field.
