RTÉ Philharmonic Choir
The RTÉ Philharmonic Choir is an Irish choir, part of Irish public broadcaster RTÉ. Organisation The choir is part of RTÉ Performing Groups, and the chorus master is Mark Hindley. The choir members, all of whom commit their services entirely voluntarily, meet each Wednesday from 7.30pm-10.00pm for rehearsals in the RTÉ Radio Centre and once a year gather for a residential training weekend which provides social opportunities alongside intensive workshops on technique, ensemble and repertoire. Activities The Choir has been at the centre of choral music in Ireland since its foundation by Colin Mawby in 1985 following the introduction of new choral policy. This 140 strong choir is the country's premier symphonic choral ensemble and has performed more than 52 of the major choral works since its foundation, mostly in conjunction with the RTÉ orchestras. Dublin
Dublin (; , or ) is the capital and largest city of Republic of Ireland, Ireland. RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra
The National Symphony Orchestra (NSO; previously known as RTÉ Symphony Orchestra and the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra) is the largest professional orchestra in Ireland. Housed at the National Concert Hall, Dublin, since January 2022, it used to be the concert and radio orchestra of Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), Ireland's public radio station. It plays an important role in Irish cultural life, also undertaking occasional tours of Ireland. History In 1926, a national radio channel, based in Dublin, began broadcasting. RTÉ Lyric Fm
RTÉ Lyric FM (stylised as RTÉ lyric fm) is an Irish classical-music and arts radio station, owned and operated by RTÉ. The station, which is based in Limerick, was launched in 1999 and is available on FM throughout Ireland (in some areas also on DAB), on Sky Digital satellite in Ireland and the United Kingdom, and via the Internet worldwide. As of 2021, RTÉ Lyric FM attracts a weekday audience share of 2.1%. The current head of the station is Sinéad Wylde. History RTÉ Lyric FM developed from FM3 Classical Music, which began broadcasting on 6 November 1984. FM3 broadcast classical music on the RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta network at breakfast time, lunchtime and in the evenings. Colin Mawby
Colin Mawby KSG (9 May 1936 – 24 November 2019) was an English organist, choral conductor and composer. From 1961 he was Master of Music at Westminster Cathedral, then from 1981 he was the choral director at Radio Telefís Éireann. He composed masses dedicated to specific choirs, including in Germany. He was awarded Knighthood of the Order of St. Gregory in 2006. Early life and education Mawby was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire, on 9 May 1936. He received his earliest musical education at Westminster Cathedral choir school, where he acted as assistant to George Malcolm at the organ from the age of 12. The boys sang 14 or 15 services a week and had 10 hours of rehearsals a week, learning plainchant and polyphony. RTÉ Performing Groups
RTÉ Performing Groups was a group, operating over many years, of five classical ensembles, part of the Irish broadcaster Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ). All but the string quartet (originally the Vanbrugh Quartet, the ConTempo Quartet from 2013) are based in Dublin (the ConTempo had a Galway base, Vanbrugh Cork). In 2022 three of the group were moved from RTÉ to aegis of the National Concert Hall by the Irish government. RTÉ continues to host the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet
The Vanbrugh, often styled The Vanbrugh and Friends and previously the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet, is an Irish classical musical group. The resident string quartet to Raidió Teilifís Éireann, Ireland's national broadcasting service, until 2013, and collectively artists-in-residence to University College Cork, the Quartet members were also founders of the West Cork Chamber Music Festival. Organisation and history The group comprises Keith Pascoe on violins, Simon Aspell on viola and Christopher Marwood with cello, and they add 1-2 members for each performance. RTÉ Cór na nÓg (RTÉ Children's Choir in English) is an Irish children's choir. The choir is part of RTÉ Performing Groups. History The choir was founded in 1985 by RTÉ choral director Colin Mawby. As of 2018, the group had 62 members, with choristers ranging from the ages of 10 to 15. The group has performed at venues such as the National Concert Hall, the National Gallery of Ireland, Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, and the 3Arena. Performances are sometimes made with the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. RTÉ Concert Orchestra
The RTÉ Concert Orchestra is one of the two full-time professional radio orchestras in Ireland that are part of RTÉ, the national broadcasting station. Since its formation as the Radio Éireann Light Orchestra in 1948, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, has grown from a small studio-based recording group to become an active 45-strong orchestra performing over eighty concerts annually. It is part of RTÉ Performing Groups. The orchestra performs classical, popular and big band evening and lunchtime concerts, covering a range of music from baroque to contemporary.
