RAF Bellasize
Royal Air Force Bellasize, also known as RAF Bellasize, was a former RAF airfield in the hamlet of Bellasize, near Gilberdyke, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. Originally opened in 1916, Bellasize was one of only four Yorkshire-based RAF locations to see use in the First and Second World Wars. Flying at Bellasize was sporadic and training based, with the site not being used in an offensive capacity during the Second World War. History Bellasize appears to have been equipped with just one runway, which was a grass strip measuring angled in a north east/south west direction across a rectangular field. There are no records of any hangars or permanent buildings at the site. The site was opened in April 1916 as a 1st class landing ground. River Ouse, Yorkshire
The River Ouse ( ) is a river in North Yorkshire, England. Hydrologically, the river is a continuation of the River Ure, and the combined length of the River Ure and River Ouse makes it, at , the sixth-longest river of the United Kingdom and (including the Ure) the longest to flow entirely in one county. The length of the Ouse alone is about but the total length of the river is disputed. It is a matter of opinion as to whether the River Ouse is formed at the confluence of the River Ure and the much-smaller Ouse Gill Beck at Cuddy Shaw Reach near Linton-on-Ouse, about six miles downstream of the confluence of the River Swale with the River Ure. The East Riding of Yorkshire is a local government district with unitary authority status, and is a ceremonial county of England. Brough Aerodrome
Brough Aerodrome was a private use aerodrome located at Brough, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is now disused with the last known flight out of the airfield occurring in 2011. The airfield closed in 2013. It is planned that the site will be crossed by a new road serving the town. RAF Catterick
Royal Air Force Catterick or RAF Catterick is a former Royal Air Force airfield located near Catterick, North Yorkshire in England. It is located alongside the A6055 road on the outskirts of Catterick Village. Although initially a flying station, RAF Catterick was primarily the depot of the RAF Regiment for nearly 50 years. The station closed in 1994 and was transferred to the British Army to become Marne Barracks. Operationally it falls under the command of Catterick Garrison. Royal Air Force Doncaster or more simply RAF Doncaster, also referred to as Doncaster Aerodrome, is a former Royal Air Force station near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. RAF Driffield
Royal Air Force Driffield or RAF Driffield is a former Royal Air Force station in the East Riding of Yorkshire, in England. It lies about south-west of Driffield and north-west of Beverley. It is now operated by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, as the Driffield Training Area. History The site was first opened in 1918 by the Royal Air Force under the name of RAF Eastburn, and closed in 1920. In 1935 a new airfield was built, initially training bomber crews. In 1977 the site was turned over to the British Army for use as a driving school, and was renamed Alamein Barracks, a satellite to Normandy Barracks of the Defence School of Transport at Leconfield. Gilberdyke
Gilberdyke is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately south-east of York and west of Hull. Gilberdyke lies near to Howden which is away. It lies on the B1230 road, south of the M62 motorway. The civil parish is formed by the village of Gilberdyke and the hamlets of Bennetland, Hive, Sandholme and Scalby. According to the 2011 UK Census, Gilberdyke parish had a population of 3,430, an increase on the 2001 UK Census figure of 3,028. The village is served by Gilberdyke railway station with trains operating between Scarborough/Bridlington via Hull to Doncaster and Sheffield, and between Hull and Selby/York. Bellasize
Bellasize is a hamlet in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately east of the market town of Howden. History The name of the hamlet derives from the French meaning ''beautiful seat (belle + assis, belasis, belasyse)'', and has the same derivation as Belsize. Historically in the wapentake and liberty of Howdenshire, the village now forms part of the civil parish of Blacktoft.
