The R73 is a provincial route in Free State, South Africa that connects Welkom with Winburg. Route The R73 begins in Welkom (west of the town centre), at a junction with the R30 Road. West of this intersection, it is the R710 Road towards Bultfontein. The R73 begins by going eastwards into Welkom Central as Stateway, co-signed with the M4 Road of Welkom, up to the 3rd roundabout, where it meets the M1 Road of Welkom (Koppie Alleen Road). The R73 joins the M1 northwards up to the next roundabout, where the R73 becomes its own road eastwards as Jan Hofmeyr Street. After the next roundabout with Power Road, the R73 becomes a dual carriageway and meets the R730 Road (ZR Mahabane Highway) at the 2nd junction afterwards, south of the Thabong suburb of Welkom. Welkom
Welkom () is the second-largest city in the Free State province of South Africa, located about northeast of Bloemfontein which is the provincial capital. Welkom is also known as Circle City, City Within A Garden, Mvela and Matjhabeng. The city's Sesotho name, ''Matjhabeng'' means 'where nations meet', derived from the migrant labour system, where people of various countries such as Lesotho, Malawi and Mozambique etc. met to work in the mines of the gold fields. A settlement was laid out on a farm named "Welkom" (which is the Afrikaans and Dutch word for "welcome") after gold was discovered in the region, and it was officially proclaimed a town in 1948. Winburg
Winburg is a small mixed farming town in the Free State province of South Africa. It is the oldest proclaimed town (1837) in the Orange Free State, South Africa and thus along with Griquastad, one of the oldest settlements in South Africa located north of the Orange River. It is situated where the N1 National Highway (which goes north to Johannesburg and south to Cape Town) meets the N5 National Route (which goes east to Harrismith). The nearest city, Bloemfontein, is 120 km away southwards via the N1. History A small group of 11 Voortrekker settlers, led by Andries Hendrik Potgieter, first arrived in the area of Winburg in 1835. Virginia, Free State
Virginia is a gold mining town located in the Lejweleputswa District Municipality and on goldfields of the Free State province in South Africa about 140 km (90 mi) northeast of Bloemfontein the provincial capital. History In 1890, two railway surveyors from the state of Virginia in the United States etched the name of their birthplace on a boulder near the farm Merriespruit. When a railway siding was eventually established at this spot, the name was adopted, and it stuck after the discovery of gold in 1949 which resulted in a mushrooming settlement on the banks of the Sand River. In 1988 the Sand River burst its banks and flooded parts of the town. In 1994 the Merriespruit tailings dam disaster occurred just outside Virginia, killing seventeen people. The R30 is a provincial route in South Africa that connects Bloemfontein with Rustenburg via Brandfort, Welkom, Bothaville, Klerksdorp and Ventersdorp. The southern part of the route is tolled, as the R30 forms the first section of the ZR Mahabane Toll Route, with the Brandfort Toll Plaza found 10 kilometres north of its Southern junction with the N1 National Route. The tolled portion ends at the junction with the R730. Bultfontein
Bultfontein is a town in the Free State province of South Africa with a total population of about 23,400 people. It is situated in the Tswelopele Local Municipality, about north of Bloemfontein. The town site was laid out in 1873; it had been delayed because of a location dispute which also led to the establishment of Hoopstad to the north-west. The township of Phahameng was established on the outskirts of Bultfontein in the 1970s. According to the 2011 census, Bultfontein proper has a population of 2,176, while Phahameng has a population of 21,189, giving the urban area a total population of 23,365. Of this population 93% described themselves as Black African, 5.5% as White, and 0.5% as Coloured. 57% spoke Sotho as their home language, 23% spoke Xhosa, 9.5% spoke Tswana and 6% spoke Afrikaans as first language. The R730 is a Regional Route in Free State, South Africa. The entire 40-kilometre route is part of the ZR Mahabane Toll Route maintained by the South African National Roads Agency, which goes from Bloemfontein to Kroonstad (an alternative route to the N1 National Route). Although there are no tollgates on this stretch at the moment, it is labelled as a toll road to the near public and to motorists using the road (indicated on road signage). It begins south of Welkom at an off-ramp junction with the R30 Road (which takes over as the ZR Mahabane Highway to Bloemfontein) and ends east of Odendaalsrus at a t-junction with the R34 Road (which takes over as the ZR Mahabane Highway to Kroonstad).
