The R550 is a Regional Route in Gauteng, South Africa that connects Johannesburg South with Devon via Katlehong and Nigel. Route Its western terminus is a junction with the R82 and R554 roads in Johannesburg South, just south of Kibler Park and north of Walkerville (east of Lenasia). From there, the R550 goes south-east for 15 kilometres, following the Klip River, to reach a T-junction near a place named Kliprivier. At this junction, the R550 turns eastwards and meets the R59 Highway at an interchange just after. From the R59 interchange, the R550 goes eastwards for 20 kilometres, crossing the Klip River, passing through Garthdale (Kliprivier), skirting the southern border of Katlehong and forming the northern border of the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, to reach an interchange with the N3 Highway north of Heidelberg. Background The section of the N17 from Johannesburg to Springs is a dual carriageway and is a national toll route. It was the first urban toll road in Gauteng. Blesbokspruit
The Blesbokspruit is a river in South Africa that originates north of Daveyton, Gauteng, from where it runs south and then west past the towns of Springs, Nigel and Heidelberg before joining the Suikerbosrand River, a tributary of the Vaal River. The Marievale Bird Sanctuary is situated in its upper reaches, established when roads and pipelines reached nearby mines in 1930. An area of 1,848 hectares has been declared a Ramsar site to guard against industrial pollution of the wetland, and has been designated as an Important Bird Area. Springs is a former independent city that is now part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, City of Ekurhuleni, based in the east of Johannesburg East Rand, (East Rand), in Gauteng Province, South Africa. Duduza
Duduza is a township west of Nigel on the East Rand, Gauteng, South Africa. It was established in 1964 when Africans were resettled from Charterston because it was considered by the apartheid government to be too close to a white town. A local authority was established in 1983. Duduza experienced violent school, consumer, bus, and rent boycotts from 1984 to 1987. A state of emergency was imposed in July 1985 and the South African Army was called in as the violence peaked. The name ''Duduza'' means "to comfort" in English; this was to comfort the forced removal of the residents of the then-Charterston township, which was also known as Beirut. The R23 is a provincial route in South Africa that links Benoni with Volksrust via Brakpan, Heidelberg and Standerton.
