R547 Road (South Africa)
The R547 is a Regional Route in South Africa. Route Its northern terminus is an intersection with the R555 just south-west of Witbank, Mpumalanga. It leaves in a south-easterly direction, going over the N12 (without intersecting it), through Coalville, to a four-way intersection. The road heading south-east becomes signed the R544, and the road to the south-west the R547. From that intersection the R547 passes through Kriel and here meets the R545 at a staggered intersection. Continuing south-west, it intersects with the northern terminus of the R580 before reaching Kinross. Here it crosses the R29, thereafter being cosigned briefly with the R546. They diverge just before meeting the N17, with the R547 again heading south-west. Kinross, Mpumalanga
Kinross is a small gold mining town in Mpumalanga, South Africa with four gold mines in the region. Village on the watershed between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, between Devon and Trichardt, 42 km west of Bethal, 19 km east of Leslie and about 70 km north-north-east of Standerton. History Proclaimed a village in December 1915, it acquired municipal status about 1965. Named after Kinross in Scotland, some say by engineers constructing the Springs-Breyten railway, others by the surveyor of the town. Kinross mining disaster An underground fire started by an acetylene tank caused the death of 177 miners on 16 September 1986. Greylingstad
Greylingstad (Afrikaans for ''Greyling City''), officially Nthorwane, is a small farming town west of Standerton in Mpumalanga, South Africa. History Early 20th century The town was founded in 1909 by the Dutch Reformed Church and was named after PJ Greyling, stepson of Piet Retief. A new town was laid out 5 km away in 1913 on the farm Willemsdal owned by Willem Bezuidenhout. In 1914 its name became Greylingstad and everyone moved to the new location. During the Boer War the Scottish Rifles built a number of small forts overlooking the town and the farms beyond the hills. The Scottish Rifles laid out the initials "SR" on the hill overlooking the town, and it was always clearly visible from the main street of Greylingstad. The R23 is a provincial route in South Africa that links Benoni with Volksrust via Brakpan, Heidelberg and Standerton. Route The R23 begins at the suburb of Birchleigh in the city of Kempton Park, Ekurhuleni, Gauteng at an intersection with the M57 Municipal Route (just south of the M57 Route's intersection with the R25). It heads south-east, bypassing the Glen Marais suburb, before crossing the R21 freeway (Pretoria-Boksburg Highway) as High Road. It then crosses the M32 municipal road and becomes the road separating the Pomona and Bredell suburbs, before leaving Kempton Park and entering Benoni. The N17 is a national route in South Africa which runs from Johannesburg to Oshoek (Ngwenya) on the border with Eswatini. It passes through Springs, Bethal and Ermelo. Background The section of the N17 from Johannesburg to Springs is a dual carriageway and is a national toll route. It was the first urban toll road in Gauteng. It runs from the M11 Wemmer Pan Road in Johannesburg to Tonk Meter Road in Springs. The first part of the N17 used to be the old R77 which ran from the M46 Rand Airport Road to the R23. As part of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Scheme, two slip roads have been made linking the N17 to the N12. The R546 is a Regional Route in South Africa that connects Kinross with Vrede via Evander and Standerton. Route Its northern terminus is in Kinross, Mpumalanga, at a junction with the R29. It is initially co-signed with the R547 southwards for a small distance before the R547 becomes its own road to the south-south-west, while the R546 heads south. Just after, it crosses the N17 Highway. It passes by Evander, where it meets the south-western terminus of the R580 Road from Secunda. From Evander, it goes southwards for 54 km, passing through the township of Embalenhle and the village of Charl Cilliers, to Standerton. The R29 is a provincial route in South Africa that connects Johannesburg with Leandra and Kinross via Germiston, Boksburg, Benoni and Springs. For much of its route it is named Main Reef Road. The R29 used to end near the Golela border post, however the section from Evander to Ermelo is now part of the N17 (prior to construction of the N17 extension from Leandra to Evander, the N17 followed the alignment of R29 from Leandra; however, the extension of the N17 highway has resulted in the old section of the road being given to R29) and the section from Ermelo to the Golela border post just after Pongola is now part of the N2.
